Do you actually drive more careful when you see a "Baby on Board!" sign?

Asked by Kraigmo (9421points) November 21st, 2009

You’ve seen those yellow caution-themed signs on minivans that say “Baby on Board!”.

Do you suddenly drive more carefully when you see that?

Nah, I usually try to side swipe them.

deni's avatar

No, the thought has never even crossed my mind.

JLeslie's avatar

No.

The only time I am more careful and keep more distance is when a motorcycle is nearby.

holden's avatar

No. Why should I?

Are there ever really babies on board? There are so many shades over the windows that you can’t see into the back seat. However, you can see the driver texting, eating, and doing personal beautification while driving. Thus, the sign alerts you to spring into action to possibly save the future generation when the dingbat driver gets in a wreck.

I didn’t mention this in my question, to keep it simple…. but there’s also the parked minivans on hot days sitting in WalMart parking lots with that sign saying “Baby on Board!”.

Good Samaritan laws allow you to break the windows of a stranger’s car if there is an animal or human inside who is suffering from heat.

On a 100 degree day, if you see that sign on a parked car… Should you break the windows to rescue the baby that’s apparently on board? After all there’s a sign saying there’s a baby in there…

holden's avatar

I wouldn’t do that unless I could actually see a baby inside.

sometimes, i at least take it into consideration

No. There for a while, those signs were on every other vehicle you saw. It got pretty tiresome. I paid no attention to them.

AstroChuck's avatar

No, unless it’s a “BABY ON WATERBOARD” sign. I figure that baby has been through enough.

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

Nope, make it a point to keep them way out in front of me where I can keep an eye on them. I had some young woman trying to race me on a city street today, and she had a five year old (I’m guessing) riding shotgun. If you want to street race, drop the kids off a Grandma’s first.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

I actually find the sign helpful because it signifies that the driver is likely distracted and not paying 100% attention to driving.

I always thought the signs were stupid until I had a child. I still don’t have the sign, but sometimes I want to be able to tell people on the road: “Hey, you being late for work does not entitle you to endanger my child’s life!” What I think is that everyone should remember when they decide how to drive that any car could have a baby on board.

@Psychedelic_Zebra My favorites are the minivans with who knows how many small children in them that are speeding along and swerving from lane to lane. But there’s no test to be a parent.

augustlan's avatar

They are not intended to make you drive safely. When they first came out, their purpose was to alert rescue personnel to search for a child in the event of a wreck.

Snarp's avatar

@augustlan Huh, why did I never think of that? And by me I mean pretty much everybody.

smack's avatar

Hell. No. It makes me want to drive more recklessly. Parents who have the nerve to put them on their minivans and oversized SUVs drive me crazy… literally.

ratboy's avatar

I am especially careful when I see a “BABY IN TRUNK!” sticker because I don’t want to join the little guy.

rooeytoo's avatar

No, but I do have one on my petrol guzzling SUV that says “3 DOGS ON BOARD” hehehe so please don’t ram into me.

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

I would like to think my driving is safe enough no matter who is driving next to me.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

What really blows my mind is when I see the sign and notice that the driver is being the most reckless person on the road! wtf?

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

@ItalianPrincess1217 and to top it off, they have a pro-life bumper sticker as well.

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@Zebra
Ironic, isn’t it?

FishGutsDale's avatar

I totally do, I don’t wanna be the person that kills someone’s kid because i was travelling too close. Having said that i always leave ample room between every car just in case.

YARNLADY's avatar

@augustlan You beat me too it The sign is to let emergency personnel know there is supposed to be a child in there. They have them for your front window or door as well.

LostInParadise's avatar

@augustlan, @YARNLADY , Are the people who use these signs aware of that being their intention? If you asked someone using the sticker why they have it, what do you think they would say?

YARNLADY's avatar

The signs used to be sold for fund raisers by charity and youth groups, and they certainly knew what they were for. I can’t answer for everyone who ever bought one.

boffin's avatar

I’m watching the road. NOT reading bumper stickers or window signage…

chyna's avatar

@boffin So you don’t notice if/when you get flipped off if you do something another driver doesn’t like? :)

proXXi's avatar

Actually I temporarily drive less safely as I can’t have both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road because I’m extending my middle finger over one’s stupid, meaningless window sign.

boffin's avatar

.…@chyna
You’re assuming that I can’t drive worth a crap, thus angering those around me. Not so!
However if those other drivers are being friendly, and want to wave “Hi”.
They should use all of their fingers. Thus setting the proper example for those “on board”
