How hard is it to get into Rutgers University?
I graduated from highschool with a little above average grades (B’s and C’s, honor roll first two marking periods), never took the SAT’s and ACT’s, did some community service in the key club, and was in SkillsUSA Junior Year of HS.
I’m taking the ACT’s this December, and for spring semester I have remedial classes (English, Reading and Math) but I hope to take summer courses also so by the time I get into Fall Semester of 10’ I will be in 101 classes. I hope to take 2 semesters at BCC (Burlington County College) and transfer into Rutgers for the fall of 11’.
I’ve gotten mixed messages about getting into Rutgers and was just wandering if some people could tell me if it is really hard or what. Keep in mind I’ll be transferring.

Assuming they have a decent security system, fairly difficult without keys or a friend with an ID card. :P
go to CMU!! (PA, not MI)
Sounds like you’re going to need the SAT, not the ACT for Rutgers. And you will need to work your fanny off in community college and get a 4.0. Colleges recognize that students may “blossom” academically once out of high school.
See if your community college has an articulation agreement with Rutgers. That is, an agreement that they will automatically accept anyone who graduates from your cc with a certain GPA. Most community colleges in NJ have such an agreement with Rutgers. There should be an office in your community college that deals with transfer issues and can help you. Good luck!
It will also depend on how competetive the program for the specific major you want might be… Rutgers has so many different campuses and programs. You don’t mention major/career goals… why exactly do you specifically want to go to Rutgers?
21 years ago, I got my AA cum laude at Ocean County College, and I didn’t get into the Speech and Hearing program at Rutgers, but I did get into the program at Trenton State (now The College of New Jersey); which, in hindsight, worked out far better for me.
If you don’t know what you want to major in just yet, stay at BCC (I work in Burlington County), take electives that pique your interest, develop your study skills and communication skills, and get the best best grades you can. Once you do have your Associates Degree, you goals may be different.
Good Luck!
I’m pretty sure Rutgers must accept any credits from a NJ community college. The compromise is that they rarely ever accept credits from any schools outside of NJ.
What county are you in? County College of Morris is one of the best community colleges in the country, if you need a little “pre-game” before Rutgers.
Generally universities require higher GPA and standards for those transferring in after one year at a community college and lower their standards for those completing two years in a community college. I went to the University of Georgia after two years. I wouldn’t have had any trouble getting in after one, but I liked where I was. There were a lot of people where I was that did have trouble with their one year plan because their GPA wasn’t high enough. In addition, the college was accepting more people transferring in as juniors than as sophomores. The requirements as far as GPA for people transferring in after one year were significantly higher than those transferring in after two. I would suggest, with what you’ve told us, that you might want to wait until you’ve completed two years and can access the lower end of the requirements.
Entering sophomore year for me was 30 semester hours while entering junior year meant 60 semester hours. Not sure if you’re on semesters or quarters up there, but its not the time, its the hours.
Rutgers is “moderately selective.” It’s not Harvard, but then again, they don’t take just anyone with a pulse and a credit card. Your grades from the community college will be critically important. College credits are a much better predictor of how you will do in college than high school credits. If you’ve got A’s in the courses there, fine. If you’re pulling C’s though, kiss Rutgers goodbye.
As a current student at Rutgers that did transfer from a community college after a year, i had a 3.6 at my community college, i had 1150/1600, they dont care about the writing section on my Sats,3.4 gpa in H.S, they didn’t accept me, so did a year at a community college and they did, they do look at your highschool record if you transfer before 60 credits. My recomendation, do two years there because you will save a ton of money, believe me i wished i did two years, and then decide. Rutgers is not for everyone, its very big and your given a 10 digit number to identify you,So do your best and see what happens, i would recomend a smaller college, i wish i went to a smaller school, more personalized attention.
