How dirty do you think your couch is?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) November 21st, 2009 from iPhone

I was just cuddling up with my warm blanket on my couch and rested my head on my throw pillow. Then it hit me…These pillows have never been washed. Neither has the couch. Both couches are fairly new and the pillows aren’t too old either but still! How much dirt and bacteria do you think is living on your furniture? Is there a way to sanitize things that can’t directly be thrown in the washing machine?

I think they get pretty disgusting. I always have a throw over mine and wash it frequently.
You either have to get slip covers or use a throw. There are spray cleaners that vacuum off but it doesn’t do the trick in my mind.

I know it’s dirty because the cats have taken it over and well..it used to be blue…and now it’s more like grey, because cat hair is all that’s left…

You can steam clean couches, and most upholstery. My couch isn’t very dirty because I use a powerful vacuum on it, wash the covers that I can, and steam clean every so often. Mine are white, so deep cleaning brings the shade up a whole brightness level. It’s great! I’d suggest renting a steam cleaner.

I thought this said “crotch” and started giggling. Damnnn

Steam clean your couch if it’s cloth, pledge it if it’s leather. And you can put those throw pillows in the washing machine. My couch isn’t nasty b/c I clean it, but if you don’t yeah it gets nasty fast.

@deni, hehehehe ga

Ours is pretty clean since it is a new couch.

The house I lived in after high school was foul. There was a reason it was called the “Rat House.” I hit the couch once with a hammer and there was a bit of a puff of dust and the head of the hammer seemed to be covered with white crystals. I assume it was salt from sweat.

It just gave me a BJ so I’d say pretty dirty :)

oh my god im sorry to do this again but i read @BBSDTfamily ‘s response as “steam clean your crotch” and laughed loudly AGAIN. i love this thread i’m giving it a GQ

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@deni Do you have crotch on the brain?

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@deni Its ok. During a spelling bee in 3rd grade, it was down to 2 people (me being one of them). I was asked to spell “crouch” but instead I spelled “crotch” in front of an entire auditorium!

Hey, my brand new leather couch has a mixture of cheetos and sex funk on it. Not the cleanest, but, get some leatha’ cleaner and you’re good.

just came back from a pub crawl.. hellllllll yeah..

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@jmah I would but my couches aren’t leather :)
@all So it sounds like my best bet would be to steam them? And toss my throw pillows in the wash?

Jude's avatar

@ItalianPrincess1217 all apologies but, i didn’t read the question thoroughly.. sorry..

fabreze antibacterial spray?

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@jmah No worries :) Ahhh, fabreze! I forgot about that stuff! I wonder how well it actually disinfects? Hmm…

I am very conscious about germs. I have no couch, but I keep my relatively new recliners covered with washable throw covers which get washed frequently, and I vacuum the chairs while their covers are in the washer. I spray Lysol on nearly everything in the house at least once a week.

As a result of this and other measures we take, we hardly ever get any bad colds or flu. My son and his wife live in a pig pen, and they are getting sick nearly every other month.

I reeeeaally need to call Stanley Steemer. I prefer to have them do the steam cleaning for me.

@augustlan
This lady loves Stanley Steemer too

Thankfully I have a friend in the business. My sofas get steam cleaned quite regularly, and also mattresses, tile floors, and carpets. Clean stuff Yay!

aprilsimnel's avatar

Well, Rick James hasn’t come by in a while, so my couch is clean enough.~

If I knew, I probably wouldn’t be sitting on it right now. It isn’t something that I want to think about. lol

Couches get filthy because people eat on them, sweat on them ahem, stinky animals sleep and roll on them. Upholstery cleaners are great and zip on/button close pillow covers are even better. Nothing’s worse than curling all snuggly and woozy into a funky sofa or getting a whiff of sour yuck in your face from a throw pillow.

If I were to sit on it without a shirt, I’d get up minus the skin of my back.

* Cries * – Why oh why does my innocence continue to be corrupted with the knowledge of germs. You know that this will forever cross my fragile little mind when I cuddle up on the couch in future!

Oh yeah, which reminds me… I was having a few drinks last weekend and whist having random discussions (as you do) my friend happened to mention bed bugs. He told me that they all live in your bed and that the dust is their corpses and faeces. EWWW… he also said that morning breath results from bed bugs defecating in your mouth!? I really hope he is winding me up LOL.

wildpotato's avatar

@Rachienz He is incorrect. Signs of bedbugs are blood spots on the mattress and bottom sheet from them excreting the blood they suck from people. They’re usually seen along the seams, and around corners, of the mattress. They are not in the vast majority of mattresses. He is close to correct about dust, but it’s not bedbugs: it’s dust mites.

@wildpotato I feel a bit better after reading your post. I think…

I think my couch needs a good shampooing.
