Thanksgiving meal. Are there favorites you're happy to have remain the same year after year instead of having them modified by a new recipie?

Asked by hungryhungryhortence (12176points) November 22nd, 2009

I read a lot of people wanting to try new dishes. My own mother insists over the protests of anyone else to try new dishes. Is there some sort of repulsive American Pie-ness to want some simple things left simple? I’m one of those people who look forward to holiday foods that I wouldn’t usually let myself eat the rest of the year or I associate those foods with particular good memories I want to indulge in all at once on that holiday. Martha Stewart, O and for so many years Sunset magazine have been the bane of our holiday table.

You can get creative with the cranberries if you want, and I might even try it, but for some reason it’s just not the same without that crazy, gelatinous cylinder of extruded cranberry sauce-from-a-can. What would Thanksgiving be without all my other food turning bright fuchsia from coming into contact with it? Mmm, memories!

@laureth: Yes! We graduated some time ago to the whole berries version and at least we stir the stuff up before putting it in a pretty bowl but… yeah. I still pine away for spiced and dyed apple rings out of a jar.

Freaking post moderated for misspelling “recipie”, where is spell check when I need it!

Mac ‘n’ cheese. The kind I get to eat is homemade and extra cheesy, so it can stay as it is, thanks!

Buttermilk biscuits.
Red Velvet cake.

Oh, never change! Boy, I like my starch, don’t I?

Put my mother in the traditionalist column. And I do look forward to it!
