Can anyone help me find out why my "System 32" folder pops up whenever I open a browser?

Asked by Strauss (23835points) November 22nd, 2009

My PC (running Windows XP) started to act extremely slow when opening a user profile, then took a very long time to open a browser (I tried IE, Chrome, and Firefox). Upon recommendation from a fairly tech-savvy friend, I downloaded and ran a program called “Free Window Registry Repair”. It had gotten a pretty good review from C-Net, so I thought it would be OK. Ever since I ran the registry repair, my System 32 folder opens up whenever I open a browser (any browser), and it still takes up to 5 minutes (after I close System 32) for the browser to launch.

Did you back up the registry? If so restore it, and then come back here. If not, you have learned an important lesson.

@Yetanotheruser @pdworkin ‘s solution will likely work. Here is what microsoft hints at… a flawed or missing registry entry.

@pdworkin, @NaturalMineralWater, Thanks. I thought it was something like that. I’m on another pooter right now, but I will try these suggestions and report back.

You can also see if there is a system restore point that precedes the registry change.

I tried the system restore point; went through system restore, auto restart, etc, and was told unable to complete system restore.

Next step: Backup, wipe and reinstall OS?

Well f you know what’s wrong and you are sure of yourself when it comes tor regedit, you can try that, or you can download the free CCleaner, and run it once before you give up.
