How much do you think Stephen King would want to open the rights to The Plant?

I have an idea for an graphic novel navigated via handheld device that incorporates Stephen King’s 2000 e-book The Plant. For me to do what I would like to do and not infringe on copyright, I would either need a license with King or for him release into the creative commons.

I think the creative commons is the better route, maybe through a buyout like Blender did with NaN. With a new interface and new look, maybe The Plant could be revived (so to speak). The question, in that case, is how much should Stephen King get for his work done to date?

@amnorvend: There’s 10,000 crazies on the internet who all want to chat with Stephen King. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get a message through all that noise. Finding a lawyer is probably the quickest way, I reckon.

@amnorvend: I was also just interested in a more general discussion of the idea of buying private works for release into the commons. I think it’s an interesting idea.

With an interesting idea like this (everybody is at least a little supportive of Creative Commons and doing something extraordinary with it) I’m sure Mr. King might want to discuss it with you. Sure the guy is busy and famous for a reason, but potential is interesting to everybody. And he’ll shut down the idea if it’s not something he likes.

I would go the lawyer route to start with, and have a professional letter ready for when you get to speak to or contact him more directly.
