Every half hour would be best.
How young is he? And what sort of dog? if he’s a mixed breed, then I know it’s hard to determine
Most puppies need to be taken out quite often, and they usually have lots of accidents when learning to “potty train” If it’s a puppy, get some puppy pads.
I agree with @casheroo Get some puppy pads. they work great! It will help keep your floors from any “mishaps” while you are training, and will be a good indicator of when your puppy needs to go. When you see it heading for the pad, take it out. It is scented, so it makes him want to go to it to pee, and will train you in how to train him!
My puppy is three months old. We take him out about every two hours. He poops about twenty minutes after eating.
Keep him in the kitchen. Newspapers all over the floor. Puppies have no control.
And welcome to fluther. Lurve.
With puppies being kept inside, you can train them to pee on cue. It takes practice. Everytime you take them outside to go toilet i would say every hour or 2, get excited and say something like “quick quick” or “toilet” and eventually the dog will need to pee when they hear you get excited and saying the cue words. This is particularly helpful if your leaving for work in the morning or locking them up at night. You say this and they will go empty their bladder for you increasing the chances of you coming home to a clean house..
Actually, the question read “How long do I have to take my dog out to pee.” I’m like…till he’s done?
I’m with @filmfann. Keep them in an enclosed area, such as the bathroom with newspapers. Puppies automatically chose to pee on papers, like cats choose litter boxes. Eventually start moving the papers closer and closer to an out side door, eventually moving them all they way out side. They’ll probably pee in front of the door a few times, but just let them know that you want them to go outside to pee.
Several co-workers have bell-trained their puppies and it seems to be working well. One takes the bell with her when they go to other people’s houses. If I were starting out with a puppy again, I would do this. Crating the dog when you’re away helps teach them to hold it, but you have to make arrangements to let them out at regular intervals.
He needs to go out very often, every 30 minutes or so if he’s a tiny puppy, every hour if he is a little older. Small puppies don’t have great control over their bladder. Get him some newspapers by the door that he can use if you don’t take him out in time. And be patient- he may not realize to immediately use the bathroom when you take him out. When he eats, go ahead and take him out. Be patient and consistent and he’ll be house trained in no time. Do NOT yell at him, spank him, etc. for mess-ups… he is too young to understand and you’ll just scare him and he won’t know what he did wrong. Instead, praise him when he goes to the bathroom outside.
Once he is housebroke, let me know and I can tell you how to train him to take two, one minute bathroom breaks a day.
