When you were a kid, in the winter, playing in the snow, playing outside even when it was windy, do you recall cold ever being an issue?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) November 23rd, 2009

I remember the results of being cold…holding my hands under cold water to bring some feeling back into them (cold water, because warm water would make them feel like they were on fire and it hurt!)

Gosh, as a kid, I remember sliding around on the ice on the frozen over creek, breaking through, landing in water up to my knees. By the time I made it back to the house, 50 yards away, my jeans would be frozen stiff! But I only remember having to walk stiff legged…I don’t remember being cold because of it. I’d just change and go right back out…

However, since becoming an adult I abhor being cold! Why wasn’t it an issue when I was a kid? Why don’t I remember it?

Whooooooaaaaaaa now that you mention it, no, I don’t think I’ve ever really worried about the cold. Well, I remember my fingers used to get cold often, but other than that, I don’t recall anything else.

faye's avatar

Sure, I remember finally giving up and going in and my feet, face and hands thawing out!

avvooooooo's avatar

We don’t get snow. :(

Facade's avatar

My parents never let me outside if it was too cold… :|

Val123's avatar

@faye Like I said, I remember thawing my extremities out, but I don’t remember actually being cold!

You don’t get a LOT of things @avvooooooo. You have a “slow children” sign in front of your house.

I remember when the snow and ice would get between my coat sleeves and my mittens. It was so cold, and my wrists would get all red and sore.

I also vaguely remember ice forming around the mouth of my ski mask and being pretty unpleasant.

That was in a very cold place. Then I moved to Florida. I always felt colder when it was cold in Florida than I ever did in 20 below. Now I live in a normal place and cold doesn’t really bother me much. I do a very good job of dressing appropriately for the weather, but I’m also just getting more and more used to it every year.

I remember how annoying a runny nose was in the cold, snow down my boots, and as @Snarp said, up the coat sleeves and mittens.

Though I’ve lived in CA for the past 13 years, I was lucky enough to spend 7 years in Virginia where we did experience seasons.

I remember all the fun of snow! I remember going back indoors to have nice hot cocoa (with marshmallows!).
I remember putting on big snow jackets and such. I remember seeing my breath. I don’t remember cold.

I don’t remember cold from rain seasons either. I remember jumping in puddles splashing around, I can’t recall being cold.

Well, durr. You fully believed in the importance of play.

Frostbite was just a word your mother told you. I remember climbing a mountain when I was four, sliding down the side over and over again in my red corduroy Osh Kosh overalls. Midway through the day, I saw my legs were hot pink.

When I got home, so was my underwear.

The dye had been running from all the icy water on me from flopping through snow for the entire time the sun had been up. Peeling them off stung, but I was too breathless and joyous to give a damn. It remains one of my favorite memories of my entire life.

Invest in playtime.
Throw your cares away.

asmonet's avatar

To this day, as soon as six inches of snow fall, I run outside barefoot and flop around in the snow. Sanity, be damned!

faye's avatar

@Val123 should have said giving up because we were cold. And wasn’t it colder back then??!! Truthfully, I think Alberta gets less snow every year which doesn’t bother me, but my kids couldn’t make the snowforts we did. I think we kind of hoped it would be a little warmer in the forts but not so much.

gailcalled's avatar

Exactly the same phenomenon as swimming in the ocean until your lips were blue…according to your mom.

Val123's avatar

@asmonet Sho nuff! I remember taking careful note of how the snow felt under my bare feet, because after 3 steps I wouldn’t be able to feel my feet anymore! It’s like…a little tinkly, tickley crust breaks, then a puffy, sinky feeling on your feet, then ever’ thing was GONE! PS. Did you know you have more nerve endings on the soles of your feet than on any other part of your body? This was a trivial pursuit Q I got….amid lots of silly, adolescent giggling (by adults) I concentrated…and came up with the right answer. Think about it. It makes PERFECT sense….

@Val123: Interesting. :)

Maybe after half an hour, yes.

@Val123 You’re so mean to me. :(

during ski trips i remember my feet being completely numb and painful at the same time. i remember the burning sensation of warming up with hot water on my fingers or toes.

but just the irritation around being cold was outweighed by endless entertainment…and the promise of hot cocoa at the end of it.

Val123's avatar

@avvooooooo Of course. You deserve it! And…But didn’t even MENTION you on this thread! Are we…paranoid? You makea me laugh! O. Wait. I edited my Q. ROFL!! You are very welcome for the unwanted attention!!

deni's avatar

Yes, I always got cold, but it just didn’t matter :)

@Val123 Fifth post. Meanie!

It’s a kid thing! the same reason you see kids out up to their necks in the pacific northwest coast in the summer- no person above 13 could do this without a wetsuit. You don’t feel cold the same when your’‘e a kid!- it’s a proven fact

deni's avatar

Yeah, I gotta say this. Warm sunny weather is beautiful and I love it when it’s that time of the year but I simply would not have enjoyed my childhood to the same extend had blizzards, snow days/weeks, igloos, and snowball fights not been such an integral part of it. I feel bad for children who have never played in the snow :(

LKidKyle1985's avatar

Ha, yeah I actually remember the winter that I did start realizing how cold it was outside. I was all excited like MAN I am totally going to dig a tunnel all the way through a snow drift this winter blah blah blah. Then I went out there and I was like. Hmmm this isn’t as comfortable or fun as last year. So I went back in. But yeah when I was real young cold was not much of an issue I would spend lots of time out there just running around jumping into snow making snow angles.

Maybe as a kid who runs around a lot your body heats up more so you don’t really feel cold. Its kind of like playing football in the snow. The cold isn’t much of an issue then either but your hands and feet get frozen.

casheroo's avatar

I miss those days. Now, I have to suffer through sitting in the chilly or unbearably hot weather since my son doesn’t seem to realize that it’s either freezing cold, or hot as hell. He also enjoys being naked, dripping wet after a bath…in the winter. I think it’s insane! But, kids just don’t seem to mind.

YARNLADY's avatar

I sort of remember being very cold, but still wanting to play. I hate being cold now.

BellaButterfly's avatar

I remember being cold. Even when I was a kid it bothered me. Especially while waiting for the bus at 7am in bitter cold wind and below zero temperatures!

Corey_D's avatar

I always hated the cold. Even as a little kid.

Val123's avatar

@YARNLADY and @BellaButterfly I remember standing at the bus stop, blowing smoke rings with my breath…..I remember stomping and jumping….but I don’t remember being cold as the reason. Not like I do now….when I bitch and grumble….

@Corey_D Yah, wull, Cory! How long as it been since you were a little kid!!! Hi there!! ~ Dutchess!~

rooeytoo's avatar

I understand what you mean. I think I was just having so much fun that it didn’t matter, I just didn’t care if I was cold. And yes it was the same with swimming, no matter how blue my lips were, I didn’t want to get out.

Now I live in the tropics and I complain about the cold when it gets below 85. It has been over 110 this week though so I am complaining about the heat, heheheh the human condition, never satisfied!

Val123's avatar

@rooeytoo “Below 85??” You suck! I’m stuck in Kansas!! You said “heheheh the human condition, never satisfied!”....ain’t the truth. (And ain’t it sad that spell check doesn’t flag he word “ain’t” as…WRONG!!)

rooeytoo's avatar

@Val123 – I know, I know, I have turned into a total wuss! (spell check says wuss is incorrect but I don’t know how else to spell it!)

mattbrowne's avatar

No. Mom had to remind me that it was cold.

Snarp's avatar

I think that as many have said, being a kid and having fun takes your mind off the cold, being active keeps you warmer, and maybe kids are a little less sensitive to cold too. My 3 year old is always hot, and he doesn’t mind the cold much, but that seems to be changing lately. But I also think part of it has to do with how our memories work. We remember having fun, but completely forget being cold. We do this with all kinds of things. I had a job where there was one time of year that was so completely miserable that I wanted to quit. Every year, by the time it rolled around again, I was looking forward to it. I finally quit one year right after the miserable time so that my memory couldn’t trick me again.

Val123's avatar

@rooeytoo “Wuss” is absolutely correct!
@Snarp Kinda like havin’ a baby with no drugs, huh! Or moving from a house you’ve lived in for 13 years! “I’ll NEVER do that again!”...

Snarp's avatar

@Val123 Yes, exactly. I almost used the baby example, but as a man I feel unqualified to discuss the topic.

Val123's avatar

@Snarp LOL! Man, with my second one (no drugs with the first, nadda, nyet, and hoping to do the same with the second) I was going, well this isn’t so bad….then the transition contractions his and I was screaming (inside) NOW I REMEMBER WHY I SWORE I’D NEVER DO THIS AGAIN!!!! Too late!

YARNLADY's avatar

@Val123 Partly why my sons are 16 years apart. I have a loooong memory.

Val123's avatar

@YARNLADY Wow! That’s a spread!

missyb's avatar

No, I never cared or even noticed the cold, but my FAVORITE thing about playing in the snow was how my mom tried to warm us up as soon as we got inside. She’d have the hot cocoa ready, often with marshmallows, she’d bark orders—but nicely—at us to take off the wet gloves, scarves, socks, etc, and she always had blankets ready for us to snuggle in. Now as a mom I try to do those same things.
