What are some tips for a functional and practical desktop?

Asked by NewZen (3502points) November 23rd, 2009

I’m thinking toolbars and shortcuts and such. Only freeware, please.

Mac, Windows, or Linux?

Windows.

What’s rocketdock?

You know how macs have that little dock of programs on the bottom? Well it’s like that. It’s super cool, you can customize to have ANY programs on it. You can put it pretty much where ever. Another thing I like about it is that you can go to deviantart.com and look up icons, and use whatever icons you find and like for whatever programs you want.

@chelseababyy Thanks! (I’ve actually never seen a mac – lol).

@sebastian_von_tulu Thanks, but how is that different from the files on the pc anyway – you still have to name the files, and remember their names.

@NewZen You’re welcome. If you download it, it may seem weird to use at first, but you’ll like it more after using/customizing a while.

Also CCleaner is amazing for clearing space on your computer or even just cleaning out the history into your web browser of choice.

I’ll probably think of some more.

I believe search is part of the overall desktop and Everything just does it better than anything (everything?) else out there. It’s vastly superior to Windows search.

I second CCleaner and would also like to add that Revo Uninstaller is great at properly removing programs from the system.

@NewZen – you really ought to give your eyes a treat and visit apple.com and see what works of art macs be!!!

@rooeytoo First of all, you may not know this about me, but I prefer low-tech anything. The pc is for emails and fluther, searches and music. Anything else (games, dowloading and art, to name a few) is not me.

I cannot draw a straight line, nor do I wish to.

I am practically blind anyway, and what I do see – I see without colours.

I hate video games with a passion.

Thanks for the tip, but I remain unconvinced.

@NewZen – I remember you said you are almost blind, the mac will speak to you, many blind people use macs for just that reason.

mac is very user friendly, I find it much moreso than pc’s.

They are not made to be gaming machines, most gamers hate them!

And what the hell does drawing a straight line have to do with anything.

I thankfully can see very well with my glasses but I am very tactile, and I love the feel of macs, heheheh. Their lines are smooth and curved and beautiful. It is almost as nice as the silkiness of my dogs ears or that spot just in front of my mates ear that I love to touch. (I don’t really have an ear fetish)

@rooeytoo As I said, I’ve never seen a Mac – and I always thought they were for the more creative types, using it for all kinsd of virtual drawing and stuff.

There’s also the low-tech aspect – I have an old, slow pc and I’m happy with it. Spending a lot of money on a new mac simply won’t happen in the near future for me.

Thanks for your time and input anyway.

@NewZen -hehehe, okay, I give up. I wasn’t going to get a commission anyhow.
