Online Technical Expert Sites?

Asked by clearhythm (37points) November 24th, 2009

What’s the best service for finding a live technical expert to help us trouble shoot a technical problem over the net? Specifically, we need some help getting our CentOs networking interface to work correctly for one of our web servers. We would be willing to consider paying someone to help connect to our box (e.g., via VNC) to fix the problem remotely.

Have you tried CentOS IRC channels?

You can try the Tech Support Guy.

This is a free site with a very active community of regular supporters, very friendly folks sort of like here at Fluther.

The main difference is that there are more of them with technical knowledge and a more focused approach. Obviously tech oriented.

Have you considered serverfault ?

You can’t actually get someone to troubleshoot your box, but you might be able to resolve your issue if you can describe it well.

You don’t necessarily need a CentOS guru, CentOS is a Linux distribution, the free-unsupported offshoot of RedHat. Probably any good Linux person can do the job.

For one-time or short-term help, you could advertise in Craigslist’s ‘computer gigs’. Be sure to ask for professional references and check them out.

For online help, here are a couple of sites:
CentOS Wiki

CentOS.org forums
