Broken tail light. Need repair but don't want to get ripped off. Can I do myself?

Asked by davidb (74points) November 24th, 2009

I have a broken tail light on my car. Is this something that is easy enough for a individual to fix themselves without taking to a car dealership/repair shop? I always find these places charge through the nose for relatively simple fixes. Is this something that is easy enough to fix myself or should I just pay more and have a “professional” do it? thx!

I’d look at it and try to take it apart. If this was easy, then install the new one (which you’d pre-bought, of course).

Couldn’t do it yourself? Bring the new one to a shop and have the mechanic do it. It’s just a tail-light – so what’s the worst case scenario? Driving without a taillight to the shop? It’s broken anyway, may as well try this

Bon chance.

You can do anything if you put your mind to it!
doing it well is a different story.

Is the taillight itself broken (as in the plastic surrounding it is cracked) or are you saying the light bulb inside is out?

Depending on the type of car, the bulb is usually easy to replace. Your owner’s manual should tell you what type of bulb that you need, and you can do it yourself in just a few minutes. If it’s the cover, depending on the make of the car, you can get one at either Pep Boys or another auto parts store, or the dealership, and follow the instructions @NewZen attached. Things go back together the exact opposite way they came apart.

I have replaced a taillight before and it was not too bad. I had a manual that showed the exploded diagram. Go for it!

Simple!

Go to a junk yard that has your car there and pull it off one that has an intact one and just swap it out. It’s pretty simple to do. Well, I do sh!t like this all the time so I guess I find it pretty simple to do, lol.
