Is it possible to find someone's new address based on their old address?

A friend on mine moved recently, and now is going through a personal crisis. She has not given anyone her new address, and refuses to tell me (I was glad she answered my texts at all). She said she’d only meet with me if I was bringing her a gun. I’ve reached out to all our mutual friends, and we are all concerned. :-(
I am very concerned about her, and want to try to find her. I have her old address… could I look up the new address based on that assuming that she has put in a forwarding order?

I’ll operate under 2 assumptions here:
1. you’re not a stalker.
2. even if you were, I’m not telling you anything you wouldn’t figure out eventually.
I don’t know if you can get any info from the USPS, in fact I would hope that you couldn’t. You could try sending mail and seeing what comes back. Sometimes the new address will appear on the returned mail, but sometimes not.
Alternatively, go to one of those websites that find people for money. They actually work, some friends of mine did it (because apparently they lost all the contact info I had given them and therefore had to waste money finding me) and they’re not all that pricey to find just one person.
The Freedom Of Information Act guarantees that you can. If there is a valid change of address on file with the USPS you can get it by sending $1 along with a request to the post office.
I knew you’d come through, @AstroChuck! It’s a shame we can’t do it on the website. Can we do it in person at the Post Office?
I’d call or go in. It used to be a dollar. Perhaps it’s more now.
@AstroChuck: OK… she just replied to a text and is still pretty despondent. But she is texting with another friend. I am hopeful I won’t need to, but I’ll go tomorrow if necessary. Thanks again!
I’ve seen an application on a cell phone that shows you where the other cell phone is. Kinda creepy and stalkerish but… yeah.
@NaturalMineralWater: There are a few Apps like that. However the other person must have the same App you’re using, and then elect to have their location revealed. My friend has already shut down her social network profiles, and even her Instant Messenger has been set to not accept offline messages.
@hearkat ah ok.. didn’t know that. I don’t own a cell phone. XD Either way.. the fact that the technology exists is enough for me to be wary.
