Do you know any smokers who abuse The Patch in order to not have to smoke outside?

Asked by RandomMrdan (7439points) November 24th, 2009

I’m not a smoker myself, however, I do from time to time like to smoke hooka with a group of friends, or while drinking go out for a cig. So I guess I’m more of a social type of smoker, but just don’t really have cravings for it. I’ve never had the need for a smoke break or anything like that.

Wouldn’t a Patch give someone a buzz just like smoking? Do you know any smokers who work inside all day and just wear a patch to avoid having to take smoke breaks?

I know some smokers who use nicotine gum to get through the day, but not the patch.

Ugh, no! Too many patches can poison you!

Nicotine patches are slow release – the strong ones contain about the same amount of nicotine as 10–15 cigarettes, but only deliver about the same amount of nicotine as two or three cigarettes in 24 hours.

The chances of getting a hit off that is minimal. Moreover, most regular smokers don’t get a hit off the cigarettes they smoke anyway.

cool, thanks guys, I was just curious.

Yes, me, for a long time-no harm. How is it abuse?

RandomMrdan's avatar

well, I would consider it abuse if it wasn’t used the way it was meant to…for example, if a smoker just used it to get through a day, but didn’t actually plan to quit while using it.

Then I did

That’s not abusing it in any way. The person is still using it as a cigarette substitute, and as a result doesn’t smoke as much as they would without. That’s using it exactly as it was intended.
The booklet that comes with those things even gives this exact thing as a suggested use.

A friend would rake off the patch just so he could smoke (in his mind this made sense). Once in desperation he actually smoked the patch he took off. Just wrong.

It’s my understanding that it is an approved use of nicotine substitutes, not abuse.

It is not a nicotine substitute, it is an alternate means of delivery. Also just because it was not meant to be abused doesn’t mean people won’t. Painkillers and alcohol are prime examples.

@Dr_C Yeah, that’s what I meant. I have seen the patch marketed as a “can’t wait for your break” product.
