Psuedo project to test web designers skill?
At my work we’re in process of hiring a new web designer, our current process is to bring them in for a day see how they work with the team and give them a project to work on for the day. Right now the project is any random project we have at the time they come in. This doesn’t work for us because it doesn’t allow us to test someones skill in certain areas of design.
My job is to come up with a mock project to do this. I’ve already written a general overview (which needs to be expanded), which I’ve posted here.

My deadline for this just became rather short (in a matter of 45 mins to an hour) and I need some help.
I appreciate anyone’s ideas for a project or projects they use to test designers, etc.
Thank you so much!

How about designing a company portfolio? Or would that be too small and unable to really test them for any real-world projects?
It would be a start, eventually I want this project to be able to span multiple days and have many parts to it, but for now i just need something small that will test his skill.
Okay so it turns out that I don’t need this project for today, but I still need to come up with a project for the future.
Pick a non-profit organization that the business supports, and have them do the project as a potential pro-bono for that organization.
That must be some position if your getting designers to jump through those type of hoops!
Why don’t you have them build a small promotional site based on a concept of your choosing. I think if you leave it open ended like that you will be able to get a good feel for their level of creativity as well as getting a good inclination of their natural style (i.e. more straight laced business design or busy hyper artistic). This would also be a good base as you could give the designer required features for the build as you think of them, giving you the multi-day, multi-part aspect you wish to add in the future.
@drClaw The ideas behind the hoops are: A. Weed out the people who don’t really want to work with us, B. See how they interact with our team.
Portfolios are all fine and dandy and play an important role in the process, proving they have the skill. But seeing how someone works, what they come up with while they’re sitting in the office is another.
While I don’t expect them to create their best works on this project, seeing how and why is what this is all about.
I like your idea of leaving it open ended, and the methodology behind it.
