Is it possible to copy a dvd onto my computer?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) November 25th, 2009

I have some TV shows burned onto disks that I need to give back to someone but want copies of first. Is there a way for me to copy these disks onto my computer so I will always have the shows? And if I do this (it’s four seasons), will it take up a ton of space?

It will take a lot of space.

It is free and open source.

Edit :: You probably want the Windows GUI version.

It should work. I would think it’s just like putting a video off of a camera on the comp, only just off of some CDs. It shouldn’t take up too much space, either. But that depends on if you’ve already got a ton of space taken up. It might fill the hard drive up.

You could just copy all the files (the folders: AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS) to your harddisk. If you have all the codecs installed you can view your tv-shows by openening the VIDEO_TS.IFO file (right click on it, choose ‘open as’, and pick your media player). You might need some extra video codecs, if so, choose a codec package here. I use the K-lite codec pack myself.

for me, it took up alot of space. make sure you delete your dvds after you burn them again

It takes up a maximum of 4.5 Gygabites of space. Unless we are talking about a blueray of course.

@markyy that would be for single-layer DVDs; many of the store-bought commercial releases are dual-layer which doubles the capacity from 4.3 to 8.6 GB per disc. If we’re talking 4 seasons worth, this could translate to many gigabytes.

@sndfreQ : these are burned CDs, shows were downloaded from the internet and put on disks. Either way, I have given up on trying to copy these disks… they’re an ex’s anyway, so maybe he just won’t get them back, hehehe

thanks everyone!

Yes, though the size of the video file is prohibitive to permanent storage on your pc. It’s preferable to transfer the dvd files onto a more portable medium ie. blank dvd.

A GOOGLE search will offer many excellent tutorials on how to copy dvds.
