How does Google stay afloat?

Asked by RocketSquid (3486points) November 25th, 2009

Google offers a lot of stuff for free. Email, a browser, chat services, maps, they’re even talking about giving away computers. How do they pay for all of this? Is it really all through advertising or do they receive funding from another company?

Just through advertising.
People pay quite high sums to be on the “Sponsored link” list in search results.

They make gajillions through advertising.

Highly contested key words on pay per click cost ridiculous quantities of money. The sort of money people are prepared to pay to have customers that are looking for exactly what they want to sell them delivered directly to their doorsteps rather than their competitors.

They have multiple other advertising streams as well but yes, pretty much all if not all of googles ridiculous quantities of money come through advertising.

Actually when you search something, lets say cars, on Google, many car companies continually raise the price they will pay to be the first result. this is how Google used to make most of its money. now of course they own companies such as Youtube, and you can imagine the advertising cost there…

Google is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Taco Bell, which funds all of its research and free applications.

When ever you see an internet ad, if you click on it, google gets money. In fact, you know those free NING social networking sites anyone can create for nothing? You incorporate ads into the site….

Sarcasm's avatar

well, not EVERY ad is from Google. In fact, Microsoft’s Bing and Yahoo are both in the ad game, losing terribly to Google, but they ARE there.

@hhh

Idiocracy was such a terrific movie in spite of it’s title. We must be one of about 12 people who have seen it.

They buried it in it’s original release. I guess there was way top much truth for the bigwigs to be able to tolerate.

Could be the fact that they get as much advertising revenue as every single print magazine in the united states combined?
