Which season of Buffy would be the best for helping me cope with and overcome my current crisis?

Asked by tinyfaery (44249points) November 27th, 2009

I am sad, and my ever in flux existential crisis is focused on having a purpose for living and being worthy of the sacrifice and hard work my mother put into raising me. I feel stuck. I need some motivation and I need to find focus.

I often feel the urge to watch Buffy in times like these. Suggestions?

Well, season 5 has a few things that might make it apropos of the situation, considering that season’s focus on Joyce and what Buffy does for Dawn in the end. That season annoyed me upon it’s first airing – I wasn’t sure about Michelle Trachtenberg and was still pissed from what they did to Spike in season 4 (which I thought was awesome, otherwise) – but “Fool for Love” won me over.

I just did a quick Google search to see what I might add here, and was very surprised to find out that Buffy is indeed used in therapy. Who knew?

Personally, I opt for a private Johnny Depp film festival, but that’s just me.

I loved Season 6 when I was depressed. Buffy was depressed right along with me, it was comforting somehow.

But if you want a fun distraction, I like the earlier seasons like 2 and 3. The finale of 2 is also great for having Buffy stand up for and by herself.

“Which season of buffy..”.
None.
Try ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ instead.
Now there’s a powerful woman.
By the way, why are you “sad”?

@lloydbird It has nothing to do with a powerful woman. It’s the underlying themes of Buffy that do it for me. My mom died.

@tinyfaery So sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you.
You’ve always impressed me.

@tinyfaery: I’m so sorry about your mother. Buffy will make you feel a little better.

When I’m feeling sad, I watch the musical. Also, considering the circumstances, perhaps “family” would be good to watch. We’ll be your family. If necessary, I will hit you to prove that you are human.

I highly recommend season three here. In the beginning, it’s all about sacrifice, but it’s also about moving on from sacrifice and the fact that, in the end, you can’t control everything. You just have to take the hits as they come and move on. And you absolutely can take the hits and move on. Plus, they’re still in high school, so there is more fun, goofy stuff going on to lighten your heart.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope that some Buffy will make you feel a little better.

Well, Buffy loses her mom in season 5 (Episode: The Body). I’m not sure if watching this will make you feel better or worse. But man. I remember watching these episodes and just feeling awful. It really hit me hard (I was very emotionally invested in Buffy). But it might help you to watch her get through it.

Hmm…well, I guess it depends on whether you want to be sad with Buffy (s. 5 and 6) or have a great distraction (s. 1–4).

Have you considered watching either Firefly or Angel instead? (You could watch all of Firefly and Serenity in the time it takes to watch half a season of Buffy. And the writing is excellent and funny.) Angel deals with a lot of loss in season 2, but if you haven’t seen any of the series before, I would start with the first season.

I hope you feel better soon, and I am so sorry for your loss. (((((hugs)))))
