For personalized help in losing weight & solving health concerns, would I be better off looking for a Nutritionist vs Registered Dietitian?
Looking for help with losing weight, including any food sensitivities (that could cause bloating and/or headaches), with lowering cholesterol, with good nutrition for better health… those types of things. Someone who would do blood/urine tests for personalized analysis rather than just general diet advice. Would I be better off looking for a Nutritionist or a Registered Dietitian? Or another specialist?

I worked very succesfully with a nutritionist for weight loss several years ago. I’m not sure what the actual professional distinction is, however, I would think finding someone you are comfortable and compatible with would be most important. Why don’t you ask friends and your doctor for a recommendation and then go for an initial appointment?
If I remember correctly, a Registered Dietitian has a master’s degree. A Nutritionist has had training in some of the same things, but generally not with the same depth. This does not mean that he/she has not studied and learned on his/her own.
I would start with your doctor for a recommendation.
With Kaiser, we are allowed to see both, but your doctor’s recommendation would be your best guide.
Well, my doctor, as much as I love her, seems to prefer prescription “bandaids” rather than diet/nutrition to try to solve the underlying causes. I would be doing the RD or Nutritionist under Flexible Benefits so wouldn’t need a doc referral so I was hoping to get some advice from Flutherites who might have already used one of these routes. Thanks anyway, I do appreciate the replies :)
you would be better off with a registered dietitian. My dad works in an office with other registered dietitians. He performs stress tests. I have been able to shadow him a couple of times and have seen what goes on on a day-to-day basis and this is your best option. Not only will you get the knowledge, but you’ll walk away with whatever info you need printed out for you.
You would be better off going to see both then comparing the advice that they give you.
