What are your favorite Christmas songs?

Asked by Foolaholic (5804points) November 28th, 2009

Brothers and sisters of the collective, it’s getting to be that time of year again. So instead of going to sleep, I have decided to start putting together my Christmas play-list for this year. Here’s what I have so far;
“Jingle Bells” off the Spongebob Yellow Album
“I Saw Three Ships” performed by The Barenaked Ladies
“Christmas” by Blues Traveler
“The Christmas Song” by Hootie & The Blowfish

What about you; what are your favorite songs for the Christmas season?

“Merry Christmas Darling” is my favorite. I was in chorus during high school and one year we visited a nursing home for the holidays. That was one of the songs we sang and halfway through the song, I glanced around the room, and noticed many people crying and getting choked up. It was so sad and touching. To this day I still get teary eyed when I hear that song.

@absalom- That’s what makes the song for me as well.

I’m not a Christmas song person. I’d be perfectly happy going all year without hearing Christmas carols/songs. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t start playing in September.
For what it’s worth, I really like the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack.

Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth by David Bowie & Bing Crosby

Oh Come oh Come Emmanuel

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming

Once in Royal David’s City

Handel’s Messiah (yeah, I’m aware that it’s not just A song, but it’s just not the holiday season without hearing it through once)

PapaLeo's avatar

@augustlan LOL. What is it about Christmas that brings out the most twisted productions?

Andrea Bocelli has a great new Christmas CD. He does a duet with Mary J. Blige of What Child is This which is really good and one with Natalie Cole. What I don’t like is radio stations who change their format a month or more before Christmas to all Christmas music all the time. Before December arrives you are already sick of it. My favourite of all time is still Eartha Kitt’s Santa Baby.

Lurve for the reminder of good old Weird Al.

That also reminds me of one I forgot for my list.

“Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”

@absalom : One year some of my friends and I searched with the power of the internet for the perfect “fall on your knees” delivery. I think Mariah Carey won for most powerful. I love that song! It’s beautiful.

I love so many Christmas tunes. I absolutely adore Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I like funny ones, too. I think my all time favorite songs to hear around this time of year are the ones you’d hear in church. Particularly the Hallelujah chorus. I think the reason I went to church for so long was so I could sing the music there.

Side story: One summer I took a trip to OC Maryland and we were all out on the beach one night looking at the stars on a blanket. There were about 7 of us. One of us started singing “O Come All Ye Faithful.” Everyone else joined in, no questions asked. At the end we sang “Christ the Lord…” all in different, perfect harmonies. Then it was over. It was the strangest phenomenon… We were like, “Where the hell did that come from?” We still laugh about it to this day.

My Christmas playlist is so typical, it’s almost embarrassing:

Happy Christmas (War Is Over by John & Yoko
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas as performed by Frank Sinatra
Carol of the Bells as performed by the Trans Siberian Orchestra
Mr. Grinch as performed by Boris Karloff
12 Pains of Christmas
Dominic The Italian Christmas Donkey
Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree as performed by Brenda Lee
Nutcracker Suite as performed by the Trans Siberian Orchestra
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (live) as performed by Bruce Springsteen
Holly Jolly Christmas as performed by Burl Ives (my all-time favorite)
Jingle Bell Rock as performed by Burl Ives (I think it’s him… that’s what my mp3 says)
White Christmas as performed by Bing Crosby
Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer as performed by Burl Ives
It’s Christmas All Over (Again) by Tom Petty
Christmastime Is Here (vocal) by Vince Guaraldi
Skating by Vince Guaraldi

I’m also partial to All I Want For Christmas Is You (is that the name?) by Mariah Carey, even though I can’t really stand her. I have to be in the mood.

Also, some remix of a Final Fantasy song that someone added bells to and it sounds Christmas-y… lol… I don’t know which song or which Final Fantasy.

Christmas in Hollis by Run-DMC; the gag being that Hollis, Queens is where I will have my Christmas, at a relative’s home that’s a few blocks away from where Rev. Run’s (and LL Cool J’s) parents still live.
