Job Application wants credit report...What for?

Asked by BluRhino (1401points) November 30th, 2009

A Job I am applying for online wants a printed credit report, although they claim it has no bearing on hiring possibility. What for? Is this legal/normal? Or is it to get business for report companies? Do I need to comply? What gives?

Is it a real company? My initial thought is SCAM. Sounds like identity theft.

Never heard of such a thing. What kind of job is this?

Depends on the situation. It may or not be a scam.

I applied for a computer related position on craigslist; the respons is from a recruitment advisor at a HR Staffing Dept. at Recruitjobs.org

@shilolo Thanks for that article.

I wouldn’t give out the info unless you have physically talked to the person. Shit, my resume has “References available upon Request”.

I filled out an application at a local hospital about two months ago that asked/told me they would be checking my credit report. I thought it was strange…but I was told it was to show that you are a responsible person and pay your bills on time, etc., so you can be a reliable employee. I’m thinking that if I NEEDED the job REALLY bad because I lost my other job and COULDN’T pay my bills, then my credit report would show such a thing, as well. Either way, I consented to it. I never heard back from them. I doubt it was because of my credit score though. I think it’s because I’m a bunny.

Its all about resonsibilty. Its also about motivation to come to work. If you’ve got good credit, it shows you’re a responsible person who pays bills on time and all kinds of things like that and are likely to be a similarly responsible employee. If you’ve got a couple of things that are giving you bad credit, they might think you’re more motivated to come to work and actually need a job because you’ve got debts to pay and need the income to do it.

@autumn43 You should file a lawsuit. Discrimination! Just because you’re a bunny and have… how many kids? Anyway, all the days you’ll miss because of baby bunnies being sick and all that shouldn’t be held against you! :D

I too applied for a position on Recruit.org and they asked me to fill out the credit report. I marked saying I have one and will bring it to the interview. but now it won’t let me move on to the next step.

Sounds like a scam. I too got an email from recruitjobs.org after replying to a Craigs list post. When it came to the credit report requirement, I check “Get credit report”. It took me to another sight that stated if I did not cancel membership within a few days I would be billed 14.95 month. So I went back to the questionaire and check “I have report”. After answering a few more questions I hit next and it would not go to the next page. I would think that if an employer wanted your credit report, they would get your permission and obtain it themselves.

It is a scam – I also was filling out the app from recruitjobs.org and clicked that I already had a copy of my credit report and it wouldn’t go anywhere. Out of curiosity, I went back up and clicked the “get a free credit report” link and my K-9 web alert blocked the page as a potential threat. G’s could you imagine giving your social security number to someone that has spyware on your computer? i’m really shook up about this. I got the job info off of Craig’s list, and sent them my resume that all sorts of personal info on it, as well as my business references.

My first thought is that it is so they can tell if you are the kind of person who will come to work on time and is a responsible person or not. I sure hope it is not a scam
