How many people use Skype to find and talk to people they don't know?

Asked by scula (54points) December 1st, 2009

As in, you find someone’s profile on Skype and then decide you want to talk to them. You then either IM or Skype them to try to talk. Do people do this often or is most Skype use between people who already know each other? Have you ever had a good talk on Skype with someone you met this way?

Hey Scula, welcome to Fluther!!

Personally, I only use it to talk to people I know. I feel like, typing in random names to find people to talk to might come off as a bit creepy…

I have no interest in talking to random strangers in general. I only use Skype to talk to people I know, usually family. I don’t IM anyone, ever. Didn’t IMs die with AOL?

I use Skype to talk to people I already know and/or talk to. Talking “face-to-face” with someone I’ve never even met in person and otherwise have no contact with is a bit too much for me. Omegle is enough contact with a stranger I think, thankyouverymuch.
@Snarp: Heh, I IM pretty much daily. Adium, ftw.

@Snarp I use AIM still. Mainly for family and the kids from the classroom I worked with last year.
I only use Skype with people I’ve met or have already grown to trust. Talking to random strangers is of no interest to me. I ignore the people that try that.

@Snarp who said AOL was dead? I still have tons of friends who use it (even if I don’t).

@Snarp and @rangerr, social networking sites practice the act of talking to random strangers. :) It’s just structured differently, and in communities people often get to know each other a little better if they’re avid posters.

I understand it is a little more personal when random people try to IM or call us on Skype, but I suppose it’s sort of like the idea of a stranger trying to initiate a conversation on the street or on the train.

With this in mind, I am open to talking to random people, but only if they aren’t the usual “hey turn on yer cam” type, and are willing to have a meaningful conversation.

@Gokey This is the only site that I communicate with strangers on.. Facebook = People I know only.

@Allie I’ve get to have an Omegle conversation that didn’t turn into the other person swearing and talking about having sex with my mother.

@buckyboy28 I’ve tried it a few times, but only once did I talk to someone for more than 3 minutes. His name is Christoph. He’s actually pretty cool. We talked on Omegle for about 40 minutes or so, then exchanged AIM usernames. That was about 4 or 5 months ago. We still talk from time to time if we’re both on AIM.
