What happened to the show about the character Spike that was supposed to be made?

When Angel got cancelled, there were rumors that Joss Whedon was going make a series about Spike, or at least a 3 episode spin-off. Whatever happened to that?

It fell into the same void that all the other conceived-but-never-implemented TV shows throughout the history of television fell into.
