Is there an easier way to manage the hundreds of channels now on our TV?

We have cable TV and with it comes 1,951 channels.
It occurred to me, as I scanned through hundreds of channels trying to find something worth watching how insane it was. By the time I found an interesting show it was already several minutes into the program.
I know that I can record and find programs but even this is annoyingly lame- using and arrow-press to select a letter at a time on the menu.
Knowing some of the brilliant minds on Fluther I would like to know how people manage the age of endless TV Channels.
Is there an easier way?
How do you all deal with the plethora of choices?
Hints? Help?

Do you have Comcast by any chance?
Oh! I forgot to add it. I will edit it in but it is Verizon.
For me, it’s not about turning on the TV and looking for something good. It’s about knowing something good and turning on the TV when that something is on.
Actually, it’s more about downloading that thing and watching it in the basement with my roommates.
Also, I guess I haven’t really answered your question.
Also, is that a fox?
Oh. I’m not sure about Verizon, but check to see if there is a way to set up a favorites list. That’s what I did, and it allows me to pick the channels I regularly watch, and scroll through just those, not thousands of channels. I picked the 10 or so channels that I like, and I can just ignore all the others.
Dish and other providers (Dont’ know if Verizon is included but I don’t see why not) has a feature that enables you to make your own guide specific to your tastes. You can include Discovery and take out Spike, etc. This is really convenient for those that refuse or watch sports or don’t need MTV, etc.
Use the favorite channels option. I find I really only watch 6 or so stations. Other than that I try to remember which group of channels I like—100’s, 400’s, etc.
No freakin way!
You guys all rock!
I just found what you all were talking about in a “favorites” area and programmed in some channels. Now I will use the guide that @johnpowell poste to figure out which channels I have been recording shows off of.
Lurve to all!
P.S. @gggritso Yup! Christmas Fox!
I always do my daily TV viewing planning in advance. I look over the choices from the favorites I have already set up, and then note the ones I will be watching.
I canceled all my memberships with tv delivery services about 7 months ago i didn’t watch half the channels i was paying for and i got tired of paying a monthly bill especially with comcast it went up to 70 dollars a month for the most basic package dish is cheaper but then you got reception issues and you have to have it connected to a phone line to use it and i don’t have one of those either so what I did was i connected my computer to my TV !!
my computer is now my DVR I can record anything I want and select it all right off my tv and with services like Hulu.com or Sling.com and there a few others but these are the most high quality I don’t even have to pay for high definition it is now free I only watch what I want and record what I want for free that is an extra 100 dollars a month into the bank we now save for vacation at the end of the year !
if any one has questions on how to do this send me a message
I ignore all channels that have more than 2 commercial breaks an hour. That makes things a lot of easier to manage. At Amazon.de I can rent 5 movies or more a month for 10€. Watching too many commercials numbs the mind and I boycott this trend.
