It’s not out until July 2010, but Inception looks to be another one of my favorites.
Constantine is pretty good. Trying to think of my favorites though. This is by far my favorite genre. I just have a bad memory for books and movies i’ve read/seen.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Mulholland Drive. Talk about WTF!?! this movie is the definition.
Any of the films by Austrian director, Michael Haneke.
The Seventh Continent (Der siebente Kontinent) (1988)
Benny’s Video (1992)
71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (71 Fragmente einer Chronologie des Zufalls) (1994)
Funny Games (1997)
Code Unknown (Code Inconnu) (2000)
The Piano Teacher (La Pianiste) (2001)
The Time of the Wolf (Le Temps du loup) (2003)
Hidden (Caché) (2005)
The White Ribbon (2009)
Memento, Requiem for a Dream, Donnie Darko, mainly.
Dark Corners.
And +1 to Memento.
Also pretty much any David Lynch film.
I loved the first “Saw” movie, but can’t say I really care about the sequels.
@jfos Secret Window… really?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Waking Life
They’ve already all been mentioned but: Memento, Jacob’s Ladder, Donnie Darko, American Beauty, Requiem for a Dream; those are my top ones. I love “mind-bending” movies so I intend to see plenty of the ones people have named so far. :)
Edit: Here’s one that hasn’t been mentioned: The Virgin Suicides. Talk about bizarre. Makes me want to read the book, considering I’ve already read Jeffrey Eugenides’ only other book.
@erichw1504 Do you dislike it or are you questioning because it was a book first? Also, it was my most recent movie mentioned… which means I got the best ones out first!
13 tzameti, and feed….
hard candy and swimming with sharks, crash(not the oscar one)
@jfos Yea, I didn’t find it very interesting. Maybe you got something out of it that I didn’t.
Magnolia
Lost Highway
Pi
Secretary
Blue Velvet
Monster’s Ball
Eraserhead
Took long enough for Fight Club to get up there! Also Adaptation.
What Dreams May Come
The basic plot is a bit mawkish thus it wasn’t that highly regarded. But that doesn’t change the fact that it is beautifully filmed and mind-bendingly awesome. Like walking around in a moveable painting with colors springing magically to life. Unmatched.
I can’t remember what it’s called but there is a movie (it was on hulu) about 7 strangers who are all stranded at a hotel that one by one get killed off and their relationship to a man on death row. I guess you would want a title, all I know is this was a great mind bender. I loved it
@Buttonstc Agreed. It is one of my favorite movies.
@MacBean: Make sure you see the other Haneke films, particularly Caché, _La Pianiste, and Code Inconnu. There will be moments when you leap reflexively into your neighbor’s lap and let out an unvoluntary scream.
@gailcalled: I have also seen Caché (and both versions of Funny Games). And now I’ve just gone to Haneke’s Netflix page and added everything that wasn’t already on my queue. :D
Primer
A Scanner Darkly
Vanilla Sky
shit, I think I just broke the first rule of Fight Club.
Any David Lynch film.
El Topo.
Eraserhead, Jacob’s Ladder, The Lost Highway, Naked Lunch, In the Mouth of Madness.
Videodrome and The Ring – both phucked my head up to the point I wanted to kill my television.
ahhh i completely forgot to mention this, Cat Soup. It is a short anime movie with no words. Its about a half hour long and the whole thing can be found on youtube. Very trippy movie and a cool little story too.
Definitely 12 Monkeys. I totally did not see the ending coming.
Also, several movies with Nicholas Cage. Yes, I know he’s weird. I recently saw both Next and Know1ng. They definitely screwed with my brain.
A French thriller from 2006 – _Ne le dis å personne.
….extremely engaging, well-acted, detailed, moving, thrilling, exciting and satisfying to watch. The stakes get higher and higher as the plot unfolds. ... the viewer attached to the characters and the unique situation that presents itself. It’s a… roller- coaster of a movie that has you on the edge of your seat. An extraordinary story…
@gailcalled That was excellent! It literally kept you guessing until the very end.
@Dr_Dredd: Being able to remember neither the title nor the lead actor, I have been racking my brains. I just saw another interesting movie, “Paris,” and found the actor’s name, par hazard. If you love architecture, Paris, people-watching, Juliette Binoche and working on your French, see Paris.
(And you don’t have to die afterwards.)
Oooh! I love Paris. I’ll have to check that out. :-)
@Dr_Dredd: Make sure you watch in a darkened movie theater with a non-chatty audience. The visuals and all the details of both people and places would be a flop on Netflix.
I just watched Revolver last night, directed by Guy Ritchie. It’s rather mind-bending.
A Scanner Darkly. The ending is so haunting. I know someone already mentioned it, but it really should be mentioned alot more. Also, Charlie Kaufmanns masterpiece, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. I had to watch it a few times to really appreciate it.
