General Question

Is there something wrong with my jaw?

Asked by naivete (2463points) December 4th, 2009

Everytime I open my mouth to eat, I hear a ‘clicking sound’. Also, when I clench my teeth down to bite something, I hear a sound like air escaping… It’s weird.

Any idea of what’s going on?

@Clair There is no pain involved.

I didn’t have pain for years either. I didn’t even regard it as a problem until I realized that my massive migraines everyday were from chewing gum. Not saying that this is your problem, but it could be.

@Clair How is it diagnosed? (If it is diagnosed?) And how to deal with it?

Clair's avatar

I’m not sure. I avoid doctors like the plague. I just avoid gum and opening my mouth too wide. Also, keep ibuprofen on hand.

Dentists are usually the professianals who diagnose and treat TMJ disorders. Good Luck!

I concur with the above… it’s likely TMJ, and you should see a dentist about it. I have it, but don’t experience any pain from it unless I’ve been singing for a while (weird, right?). A dentist and orthodontist have both told me I’ll eventually suffer pain from it, it’s just a matter of time. :(

@augustlan This was not at all what I was expecting.. ugh. I am not fond of dentists.

@naivete Me neither. I feel your pain… or lack thereof!

Same thing with me. I would get crippling neck pain and had no idea why. When I realized I had tmj I changed my eating habits and the pain went away.

Mine does that sometimes too.:( Is it an everytime occurrence?

@Clair it does suck balls
I have it too, it’s hereditary, I think.

@truecomedian The hereditary part makes sense. My mom has TMJ..
