What is the most inappropriate question you've ever been asked in a job interview?

Lately, I’ve heard a few stories from friends that have appalled me. I work in Human Resources, and some of the questions they are saying they were asked during job interviews just amaze me, such as, “What church do you go to?” Another one was, “So, I take it you voted for Obama?” That was in response to her statement that she believed in ensuring excellence in the delivery of health care, which was actually related to the job in question, unlike her political persuasion. It got me wondering what other moronic questions people are asking in job interviews.

Not a question but- “Wow, you’ve got a nice rack”.
Shortest.Interview.Ever.
I once had an interviewer ask what kind of birth control I used. I didn’t answer him and I didn’t get the job.
“Are you planning to get pregnant within the next year?” – did not answer and did get the job
@poofandmook Lets make babies. Right now. I love that movie.
I got asked if I was anorexic yeah, I’m that thin. I explained that I’m not and he continued to question my eating habits.
I got the job, but didn’t accept it.
I’m getting a bit nervous! So far, all these responses seem to be from women! Where are all the inappropriate questions for men?
I can’t believe the rudeness of these answers. Wow. These people will ask anything!!!
@poofandmook haha hey wasn’t that line from the stepbrothers?
@juwhite1 Not only moronic, but also illegal. The worst is asking a woman how old she is and whether she is married or has a S/O – for many positions it isn’t “worth” it to hire her (pregnancy leave, etecetera). That’s why there are work laws against discrimination based on sex, religion and age. I gave you lurve.
I had this one interview, I met with the hiring manager, I really felt it went very well. Then he asked me if I’d mind sticking around to meet the owner. He was going to be there in about 5 minutes. So I waited, and after 15 minutes until this red sports car comes speeding into the parking lot, and this guy steps out, he’s wearing a button down shirt with the top 4 buttons undone, tons of chest hair sticking out, and a large number of gold chains adorning the area. He buzzes past me, doesn’t even acknowledge me, then 5 minutes later, the hiring manager comes out and asks me if I can come back in 45 minutes, the owner has a few things he needs to do before he can meet with me. It was lunch time, so I said I’d go grab lunch and come back, which I did. I got back with time to spare, and I waited all that spare time plus another 15 minutes. Finally I was met in the lobby by the hiring manager again, he brought me to the owner’s office. The guy told me we’d have to make this quick because he had to leave for the airport in about half an hour, he was heading to Greece.
So basically what was inappropriate, other than this guy looking like a friggin’ caricature was when he started to essentially call me a liar every time I answered one of his questions. For example “what aren’t you telling me?” or “What REALLY happened?” I held my ground because I was indeed telling him the truth. I didn’t get the job.
I’m only 16, and I have never been in an actual job interview—only a mock interview. But wow…that’s a shame the questions some interviewers out there give out. They sound real rude and irrelevant. Like, why do they need to know about your private life such as religion and pregnancy? And like @gemiwing said…wow they really said that? How rude.
In the era I was doing interviews, none of these questions were illegal. The employer could ask anything they wanted to. I remember being asked if my child care was reliable, and would I be leaving when my husband graduated from college. They were also allowed to reject applicants due to their race or religion.
Oh, I’ve had a couple of doozies. This included “You’ve got a lot of experience. How old are you?” and in response to my question about the dress code: “You know, nice business casual….just as long as your tits aren’t hanging out.”
“I can’t tell what you are. You don’t have an accent, so are you Hispanic or black, or what?”
I thought that at least in NYC, I’d not get asked any more questions about my racial background, but there we are. The interviewer was a white man, by the way, and I said I was human. I didn’t get the job.
Like @juwhite1 said….all of these responses are from women…and almost all of the “inappropriate” questions revolve around pregnancy and sex…........I’m glad to say I’ve never had an inappropriate question asked of me!
Mine was probably “So I see on your resume that you’re the president of this uh Native American organization….hmmm, I know I’m not allowed to ask this but I’m going to anyway: are you like, Native American?”
I told him I am, and got the job. I enjoyed working there for quite a while, too.
I’ve been interviewed about 30 times or so in my life. I can’t think of any inappropriate question. When I interview people I never ask inappropriate questions.
One weird question they asked me was “Do you sometimes sympathize with people who have gone on shooting sprees?”
I don’t see what that has to do with Publix…
@Luffy: It has to do with them trying to determine how likely you are to go on a shooting spree at Publix.
@Luffy Crazy! Were you applying for a post office job?? :)
I had one interviewer ask me out for a date once in an interview. I said no and surprise! I did not get the job . . . . he was creepy anyway. Another time I was in an interview, the the interviewer literally had a magazine open and she asked me the questions in the magazine—it was an article about how to interview . . . . hmmm.
@Shemarq: LOL! That reminded me of probably the more inappropriate interview I’ve ever had. it wasn’t that the woman asked the wrong question. Oh no, she literally did not ask me a single question. She said “Tell me about you”, and I did for about three sentences before she cut me off and started telling me about her, which continued for the next 30 minutes. Not sure if I got the job yet, but I’m pretty sure I don’t want it.
@La_chica_gomela LMAO!!! I’ve been in interviews like that too when I was job hunting. It sure makes for an awkward situation that’s for sure.
I had one today…it was all good. She was very professional but friendly. Smart, too.
