Can a blue-ray diode read a DVD?

Asked by jackm (6212points) December 7th, 2009

I am talking about the diode specifically, as I know most blue-ray players are backwards compatible with DVDs. Do they have to add the old red diode to read the DVDs, or can the blue diode read both?

According to this source (among others), two different laser sources are required for CD/DVD backward compatibility, or three different sources to also make it BD/HD DVD compatible.
