Transporting a big batch of items from England to Australia.

Asked by pjanaway (3002points) December 7th, 2009

At some point next year I will be wanting to bring a ton of my stuff from England to Australia, it will be 100s of cds and dvds. 100s of console and pc games. My old xbox, my Wii, a few books and other things.

Has anyone got any experience in transporting a batch of items this far a journey, know how long it would take? How much it would cost? How its transported etc?.

I’m clueless!

it used to be tea-chests! slowboat! but now just pack em all in a nice cardboard box and send em airfreight. It’s really expensive but always has been and cheaper than the old days. It takes about 7–10 days. be careful cause sometimes your games and dvds and stuff won’t play or work in australia. You drop it off at the post, fill up a customs form and it’s airfreighted like all the other mail.

I read the title to your question real quickly, and thought it said “a big bitch” ... thanks for the chuckle in any case

Interparcel will give you an instant quote if you fill in an on-line form (destination country and amount & size of packages are all the info it needs). It might help give you an idea of costs.

When my friends moved back and forth from England to the US, they sent their household goods by sea. It took about 4 weeks to get their things. It’s the least expensive way to send bulky goods.

When I moved to Australia from USA, I too shopped the big things by sea. They popped all my stuff in a container and off it went. I think it was about 6 weeks until it arrived. That was 11 years ago so I don’t remember cost or exact time.

Thanks for the help, I’ll have to have a look into it some more.
