What is a great device and/or method to store fine cheese?
I just thought of a perfect gift for my dad, but I’m not sure it exists yet. He buys fine cheeses impulsively, every single time he goes to the farmer’s market (which is usually daily). So my parents have about ten different types of really great cheese in their fridge at any given time, in various stages of moldification. These are usually hard to medium soft – very rarely spreadables like brie or Camembert.
I’ve glanced at the tupperwares and the keeper/slicer they’ve got on amazon, but am not crazy about either of those. Has anyone tried one of these? Any good? In any event, my budget for this is $35ish, though if I see something that’s worth it I’m willing to part with a bit more.
This is my first foray into the serious cheesophile world, so I’m sure some of you have more and better knowledge than I. Will you share your suggestions?

seriously Rubbermaid is an awesome brand
This is another type that is more elegant for presentation.
I would just wrap the cheese tightly in plastic wrap and change it fairly often. Anything else would take up too much space.
@Jeruba That’s always been my solution, too, but apparently plastic wrap suffocates cheese, which alters the flavor for the worse.
You are correct about the plastic wrap.
The item you linked to looks perfect. I have not personally tried it but I read the description and it’s pretty logical. I’m going to order one.
This article has some great cheese storage tips. The recommend Tupperware Fridgesmart containers because the cheese doesn’t have to sit directly on the bottom of the container.
this is an interesting question!
@Buttonstc, who is correct about the plastic wrap?
Sorry. I meant Wild Potato.
Cheese needs to “breathe” and the plastic wrap hastens mold development and sliminess.
…at least according to everything I’ve heard on the subject from knowledgeable folks on Food Network and PBS.
Hmm, I guess I have some cheesical transgressions to rectify. There’s no end to the number of things you can turn out to be guilty of, is there?
@Jeruba, perhaps this is why “the cheese stands alone…” teeheehee
