Are puppy parasites contagious?

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) December 7th, 2009

Puppy has a parasite. Lots of throwing up/diarrhea. Now I have a stomachache. Nothing’s come of it yet, but I can’t help but wonder if little Jackson is responsible. We’ve definitely shared saliva.

Yes, they are. Get yourself checked.

It’s unlikely but not absolutely impossible. There are a few organisms which are zoonotic which is why allowing your dogs to lick you on the mouth on a regular basis isn’t a good idea.

Far more prevalent is the transmission of roundworms which are much more common.

Ask your vet which organisms the pup tested positive for. He should know if any of them can transfer to humans.

If he isn’t sure, still get the specific names and ask your Doctor.

Most likely it’s coincidence or psychosomatic, but it never hurts to give the vet a call.

@Buttonstc hit it right on the nose… first call your vet. Once you have the specific names call your doctor.

I know it is possible for a human to get roundworms and I think hooks as well. But I have been hanging out with dog people for about 40 years and have never known anyone who had worms themselves. It is to be pretty difficult to do. But I guess not impossible. Ask your doctor to arrange to have a stool check done for you, that will tell the tale.

You can contract some zoonotic parasites, although you pretty much have to have been mucking about in poo (or running barefoot through the poo). It helps if you are immune impaired, too (young children, chemo patients, etc). Take a look at this site for more information.

Call your vet about getting the puppy in to be vaccinated and dewormed. When the type of parasite has been determined, call your doctor.

Giardia is an enteric parasite in humans… now you’re aking me way back to my second year in med school…
“Giardia lamblia (synonymous with Lamblia intestinalis and Giardia duodenalis) is a flagellated protozoan parasite that colonises and reproduces in the small intestine, causing giardiasis. The giardia parasite attaches to the epithelium by a ventral adhesive disc, and reproduces via binary fission. Giardiasis does not spread via the bloodstream, nor does it spread to other parts of the gastro-intestinal tract, but remains confined to the lumen of the small intestine. ”

It’s rather easy to treat but will make you feel pretty bad while you have it.

It can be treated with Flagyl for 5–7 days bout you need to go see your doctor to get a script and to see if that is the best option for you (it’s not the only option).

Do not drink alcohol with metronidazole unless like puking your guts up.

Okay thanks!
I’m feeling better today…so think I avoided it:) But no more making out with the puppy!

There are a lot more dangerous diseases you could contract by making out with a human than round worms, hehehehe.

Not advocating making out with your pup, just sayin…....
