What would you change in this list of top 10 lists of 2009?

Asked by erichw1504 (26453points) December 9th, 2009

As the year 2009 comes to a close, take a look at this list of top 10 lists from Time.com:

http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/completelist/0,29569,1945379,00.html

Do you agree with these? What would you add or delete from a list? If you could add or delete a whole list which one would it be?

Wow, I have never heard of any of those albums or artists. I am now officially old.

I would not have listed the top 10 crime stories at all – no need to remember some of those. And I would have listed Up as the top movie, instead of #2.

I just cringed when I saw Lady Gaga on the first list

Oooh, and with links, too. Thanx for the link to that list. I’m gonna enjoy a look back.

No, I don’t think most people will agree with the choices, but that’s life, eh?

@PretentiousArtist – how do you wake up Lady GaGa?

Kind of overwhelming lists, but thanks for the excellent link. Fun to peruse.

I think I just lost an hour of my life.

Susan Boyle scored the highest sales on a debut album. Then there was the picture where she was photo-ambushed answering the door in her robe and bare feet. She should have made some list.

@galileogirl She’s number two on the list of top ten fleeting celebrities on the link above.

I didn’t realize that Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest made the regular Billboard charts. Do I have to stop listening to them now that the punters know who they are?~

#1 – 90% of the lists aren’t even of any interest to me, I don’t care about top tweets or top fashion stories, or really most of this, it’s just meaningless time wasters.

#2 – for the things where there’s some substance behind it, maybe provide an effing link to the story, not just a headline, about 75% of these “headlines”, I don’t recall what the story was, how am I supposed to know if it’s really one of the most important stories of the year or not?

#3 – in the top albums, first of all, country has no place on the list, much less the top spot. Second, Lady Gaga is all about image, not music, another pop creation. Third, some of this stuff is just way too obscure to really be on a top 10 list. Fourth, what about the Dead Weather or Them Crooked Vultures, perhaps the two best “supergroups” of all time put out albums that could end up on the top 10 of the decade list, and no sign of them on the albums chart? What about Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown, or the release of Nirvana’s live Reading show, or the new Elvis Costello disc? Didn’t Dylan have a new release as well? And nowhere did I see the biggest music story of the year…the remastered Beatles releases, the Rock Band game, et al.

#5 – in movies, the best movie of the year is a Disney movie that hasn’t even come out yet? Really? And forgive me, but I’m a HUGE movie buff and I haven’t heard of some of these, what’s up with that? And not a single mention of Inglorious Basterds on the top movie list? Really? What about the Hangover…best comedy in YEARS.

These lists are usually horrible, no one ever agrees with them and they’re based on some random person’s opinion which is no better than yours or mine. At least I can respect a list if the person who wrote it maybe says something in defense of his/her picks, but this is just 50 random lists thrown out there, a computer could have done just as adequate a job by picking 10 random things for each topic.

@dalepetrie Where’s #4? Just messing. Great answer.

Also think that the death of Michael Jackson is the #1 news story of the year, not #6, you can base that on the amount of time reporters spent covering it, that’s a no brainer. And top TV shows, first off, the Office is still way better than Parks and Rec, they do not deserve to be tied, it’s way better than the #10 show on TV, and 30 Rock is nearly as good and deserves to be on the list as well. Guess you can call that #4.

@dalepetrie #2 – There are links to at least summaries, and many of those have links to original news reports.

dalepetrie's avatar

@Snarp – good to know, didn’t look like there were any, but I didn’t hover over the words for the most part.

A lot of the lists shouldn’t be on there – it’s all fluff

Top 10 movies included a bad one. District 9 sucked. The Hangover should be on the list.

Maximillian's avatar

On top ten feuds there should be Cheney vs White House, Obama vs CIA. Something like that.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I think the majority of that list is only relevant if you reading it in America.

Good point. But still, pretty wicked. Wait, I got one. Don’t know where it would fit, but Obama closes GITMO.
