Do you tip a dental hygienist?

Asked by wmspotts (456points) December 9th, 2009

Had my teeth cleaned after having an exam and cavity filled and was just wondering if it’s considered normal to tip an oral hygienist. I didn’t but was later thinking that maybe I was supposed to. Any thoughts?

No, they are paid well.

I never have. They make really good money, and I usually only like to tip people that aren’t already well-off.

Um.. tipping isn’t how you say “youre underpaid”, It’s how you say “thank you for a superior job” to just about anyone you care to as long as they aren’t the business owner.

@proXXi It’s not just one or the other, in my opinion. Yes, if someone actually does an excellent job and they already make a lot of money, I’ll tip them. I’m still far more likely to tip someone who did a good job that doesn’t have a lot of money already, though. Partly because, for a lot of people – like myself right now – I can’t afford to tip regularly.

Denistry is not generally considered a “tipping” field of business.

It’s a pain, run away, appointments a year late kind of business.

It has never even crossed my mind. I would no sooner tip the hygienist than the dentist.

I’m betting they aren’t allowed to accept tips.

I’ve never heard of tipping a dental hygienist.

Why would you want to tip anyone? They get a salary, why should you feel the need to pay them extra for doing their job. Thats what they are paid for.

if someone tipped a hygienist in my employ, I would be very unhappy with him/her if they accepted it. That’s not what I would want in my office and I think I am not alone. Give them a cd of nice music or a book or something.

I disagree. That’s how it should be, but that’s not how it is. Ask any waiter/waitress. If somebody doesn’t tip them, its “That customer is a douche”, not “I should’ve given better service”. Tipping is expected in certain fields, regardless of service. At least, here in SoCal it is.

I think specific jobs are tip-worthy. Jobs that you fall upon because shit happened.
Dental hygiene is not “Oh man I ran out of money for school and need to pay tuition”. It’s not a job you pick up because you (or your gf) got pregnant.
It’s something you specifically pick and you get training for.

Do you tip your doctor or nurse?

faye's avatar

I’ve been given chocolates and cookies- yay! No flowers for nurses- feed us!

Buttonstc's avatar

No, you don’t tip professionals, career people.

Being a dental hygenist is not just an odd job someone can pick up for extra cash. They already get a good salary commensurate with their experience and education in their field.

No. The dentist they work for would probably just take it anyway.

Thanks for all of the responses. I think it’s unanimous.

However, if you really like your hygienist, I don’t think it would be inappropriate to give a gift card in a holiday card at this time of year, is it?

ang523's avatar

I am a Hygienist and you do not have to tip the hygienist, it’s a nice gesture tough. Just tell her that you appreciated what she did for you and compliment her on her skills. If u want to do something nice for her just get her a little gift the next cleaning. Especially arounf holiday time get her a little christmas gift. I have received presents from my patients that i see often and am very close with :)
