What does "furious" mean to you?

Asked by faye (17857points) December 9th, 2009

I was having a chat with a friend and she said her BF was furious with her. So this meant the end. I have always used furious in a laugh at yourself later for the steam coming out of the top of your head manner. I think I am wrong?

Angry.

It also reminds me of the car films : Fast and the furious :p

When I hear “furious”, I imagine someone at boiling point, past a normal level of anger.

Someone angry at injustice.

Depends on the context. Since we have no real context we can only go by the dictionary definition. I prefer context.

Yes I think of it the same way you do. Totally in a rage over something that is maddening, but might not seem so bad later on. Of course, you can be furious for a good reason too, but it seems to me many times when I think of myself as being “furious”, it doesn’t last long and it isn’t really all that necessary.

Extremely angry. Beyond angry. Outraged.

It could be used as an exaggeration for humorous effect, in the same way we say “You’re crazy” or “I hate you” (although I’d never say this in fun) or “You’re killing me.” But each of those things could also be said very seriously, and then it wouldn’t be funny at all.

Two similar, but different things.
Either angry, or with great force. e.g. “This sure is a furious storm”. does not mean the storm is angry at us. It means it’s powerful.

I think I read too much erotica. I thought of the phrase, “furiously masturbating.” It’s a very overused phrase in that kind of writing.

Then steam would be coming out of where?

YARNLADY's avatar

To me it means ‘very powerful’. It can be applied to a race, a wind, a feeling (usually angry, but sometimes delirious, as in dancing.

To me, furious means being so angry as to be on the brink of losing control and doing some serious damage to someone (including myself) or something. When I feel like this, I just have to walk away for awhile.

But all these answers don’t seem to mean her relationship is over.! She thinks she has screwed up and she won’t tell me why she was furious..I think he probably cheated on her and she made a public display!

Like when Vreenak found out that Sisko faked a datarod to trick the Romulan Empire into the war against the Dominion.
