How do you get the 'clicks' out of your neck and shoulders?

Asked by zookeeny (888points) December 9th, 2009

I do feel really tense because my neck and shoulders are really tight and my neck clicks everytime I move it. The click sounds ‘great’ but doesnt actually seem to get rid of the tension. Are the clicks related to the release of tension or are they just sort of sound effects? Why do our joints click – like clicky knees etc.

Just wondering – oh yea and any advice to get rid of tense shoulders and neck myself (nobody on hand to help!)

If you exercise on a regular basis you won’t get the ‘clicks’ you speak of.

I walk 45 mins a day from work 5 days a week so I guess that could count as exercise! Maybe some upper body stretches might help. Thanks

If you are ‘holding all your worries’ in your neck and shoulders, they are going to ache. aado you sometimes find that your shoulders are at about the same height as your ears? This is wrong. Go and get a lovely message or have a glass of wine with me and fluther it away for awhile.

Try icy hot or a&d cream also you could take a hot bath then put the creams. It worked for me.

I try to get to the chiropractor on a fairly regular basis. That keeps the clicks away for me.

I read somewhere that the clicks were actually bubbles in the fluids in the joints that were released. I can’t provide a source for that though.

Try a heating pad around your neck and upper shoulders. They even make microwavable wraps with aromatherapy scents. If you can, try to get a massage, or ask a friend or loved one to give one to you. You can even rub your own neck. Also stretching and doing head circles to keep flexible. Be sure to drink lots of water to flush out all the stuff released during stretching/massage/heat application.

Exercise is really you best bet, but if you sit a lot during work it may not be enough. I will sometimes have my wife walk along my back, but a safer option would probably be to get a deep tissue massage and possibly a chiropractic adjustment. Just be careful not to drink the chiropractor cool-aid, you almost never need to go to them as much as they suggest, the shady bastards.
