You win the lottery. Not an insane amount, but a nice amount. What is that amount for you, and how would you spend it first?

For me, it’d be about $250,000.
Kids education, vacation and a nicer car.
Fix up the house a bit, do a few odds and ends – have more time for hobbies and have someone clean for me – or at least to help out with it. A man needs a maid, right?
You?

I would be happy with anything more than £1000 right now. I know that may seem low for a decent lottery win but £1000 would help me pay some important bills that have been worrying me of late. Anything more than that is a bonus but I just want to get these bills off my mind first and foremost.
Enough to live off comfortably for a year or two so I can quit my job; I want to concentrate on writing and begin a career doing something I enjoy.
£40,000 would be enough for two years and to buy myself and loved ones some nice things.
I can’t think about winning the lottery without it being an insane amount. I wouldn’t want to bother unless it were millions and millions. But actually I don’t know what I would do with it for myself I mean. I have most everything I want. It might be good to know that I would never run out of money no matter how long I lived, but I would probably get lazy if I didn’t have to work. I have most of the toys I want. I am really pretty lucky! I would probably put enough in the bank so that economic security would always be there, then give the rest away.
$250k-400k aud
I would buy another house and rent it out. :)
I have yet to own my own home, so that would be first.
I’d pay off my car loan, but keep the car… I Lurve it!
I’d probably save the rest, since my son has chosen to start his own business rather than attend college… I wasn’t able to save a college fund for him, and would want one in case his plans change.
I’d also start planning to see the world… there’s so many places I’d like to visit.
For all this, I’d need US $500,000 after taxes (I live in a state that is consistently in the top 2 for cost of living).
It wouldn’t matter how much, but I’d pay off a couple of medical bills, then give it to my favorite charity. Also, if I had family going through tough times at the time, I’d give money to them to get them through.
I’d really love to hit an insane jackpot so I could start my own non-profit and my full time job for the rest of my life could be figuring out how to give the money to people who need it worse than me!
For me it’d be around $500,000 dollars. I’m about to graduate college and am still looking for a job. That would help tide me over until steady I found a job in my field. I would also get a beach vacation for my parents, who have helped me out a lot over the years. My dad works harder than anyone I know, and could really use the vacation! I would also go on a photography trip to Redwood National Forest. I’ve always wanted to go there, but never had the time or money.
I need 3 million…
1 million get everything I need for family and some good friends (I might transform some lurve in cash… if that happens, I have a list of fellow jellies that will be awarded… and I will definitely buy something from @harp)
500.000 to set up a business
an undisclosed amount for charities
an undisclosed amount in fia :)
I think that 10,000 dollars would be good for right now. That’s enough for me to get another sizable tattoo, buy my mom a really awesome christmas or birthday present, learn to shoot and pay for all of my friends to do paintball on my 21st birthday.
I would pretty much take any amount at this point in time. I’m desperate, just pawned some jewelery for a rip-off price in order to pay for car insurance and I’m kind of sad about it. One of the pieces was made by a family friend who has passed on.
If I got a largish amount, like 100k or more, I would pay off my debts and get my credit back in shape. I feel I should use some of it for something charitable or that helps others, so I’d find a way to do that, too.
I would like to win enough to support my husband & myself for the rest of our lives, to be able to put away money for our kids & grandkids, to give decent amounts to selected charities. Guess I ought to buy a ticket once in awhile.
A nice amount would be $500K (but then I live in NYC). The gubmint would take half, so I’d have enough left over to pay off all of my student loan and live comfortably for a year with rent and bills fully paid. I’d be able to do some traveling along with more writing. I’d probably have enough to make a ½ hour sketch show pilot with decent production values, too.
I would like $200k. Pay off my student loans, medical bills (ouch), Hubb’s student loans, my friend’s house and have enough left to pay rent for a year. Invest the rest. We don’t need a new car or a house really. If I leave the money alone for a few years (ok, more like five) and let it appreciate, then I’ll be set.
@Zen_Again, I’d say the same amount of money as you, and spend it the same way.
Wait… is this one of those dating service blind survey match-up questions? Does this mean I’m your dream girl?
Half a million dollars. I’d first help out the many relatives who are definitely poor. Help out my parents with their new home. Then my boyfriend and I would decide what to do with the rest. I think I’m becoming less selfish. This time last year, I would not have mentioned anyone but myself and my boyfriend. Hm
1.25 Million. Will retire.
Otherwise it will get spent and you will be back to where you started from.
Or, $60,000 after taxes. It would provide a clean slate for me.
I think I’d want around 300,000 to pay off my current student loans and have enough for the my last 2 years of school + living expenses. Also to buy my parents house so they wouldn’t have a morgage. Other than those basic needs I don’t mind working to buy material things like a new car or a fabulous party dress
@pjanaway renting would being in a lot of money.. but dealing with tenants can be rough
@KatawaGrey ohh to enjoy the simple things :)
$3million would be the amount that I would ideally want, but $500K would be enough to significantly change my life, or I should say the life of my husband and me. I would buy land and create the Karting track business my husband would like to have.
Pay off debt, buy nice (reasonable) house, finish grad school without working full time, whatever education hubby wants, money for kiddo to go to college (or at least to help), once-a-week housecleaning service, save for more babies, a few vacations – $500,000.
Next round goes to 6 parents to make sure that they have no financial worries.
Next round to some close friends who are good, hard-working people but have constant financial worry.
Anything left over could be invested or donated.
@sevenfourteen: You would, of course, be invited to the paintballing. :-P
@pjanaway You can get a second house for about 15 bucks nowadays. ~
@PandoraBoxx You’ve always been my dreamgirl. Finally, you’ve realised it.
@pjanaway Uh, no
In Kokomo, Indiana—one of the top three cheapest cities in the Midwest—the average home cost only $94,000, $5,000 cheaper than a home in Indianapolis and about $50,000 less than the national average. And while Kokomo is the birthplace of the automobile, the air quality remains one of the best in the country. What else makes this city cheap? Try on its anemic average salary: The personal per capita income of Kokomo ranks 72nd in the country, providing an average of $25,053.
This is an international, no waters question.
