What's the best at-home hair color?

Asked by Lacroix (537points) December 10th, 2009

Out of the hair color products you can find at most stores (such as Walmart, Walgreens, Kroger’s), which one is the best?

I’m 23 (so no grey to cover), and I’m hoping to dye my hair a DARK, rich brown. Which hair dye should I go with?

I have used L’Oreal Excellence with, well, excellent results. I prefer it over their Preference line.

Garnier Nutrisse is another one I like a lot.

I don’t use store bought colors. I use professional shop color…Wella Color Charm. I’ve used it for close to 15 years. You can get it at Sally Beauty Supply. I highly recommend it.

I also use Garnier Nutrisse. Though I am highly disappointed that they stopped producing 635 – Chocolate Almond. It was just the right shade, a golden-y chestnut.

I like Excellence too… way better than Preference. Excellence lasts a long time and doesn’t do too much visible damage to my hair. And Nutrisse is great too.

My stylist recently told me not to use Feria if you’re going to get professional color afterwards- it can cause a terrible reaction.

I use Clairol Natural Instincts. It’s a temporary, lasts for about 6 weeks. The chemicals are less harsh on your hair and permanent fades or needs to be redone about the same time anyway. Plus, since you don’t have grey you might appreciate that the color fades all over, so you don’t get a line by the roots as your hair grows, that’s one of the main reasons I like it.

You say you want a dark rich brown, my question is what color is your hair now naturally?

Have you tried real henna??

No noxious chemicals, ammonia or peroxide; here’s a video on how to do it.

My sister used it for years on dark hair with a little gray. It took on a beautiful luster with red highlights in the sun.

@JLeslie My natural hair color is a pale brown, heavy on the red highlights.

@Lacroix You should have no problem with the temporary. On the side of the box it gives you a guide of how the color will look based on the hair color you have now. Beware that if you are not accustomed to dying your hair you might wind up darker then you expect when choosing a color whether it is permanent or temporary.

@gailcalled Will I be able to find henna at Walgreens?

@Supacase What do you like about this type versus others?

gailcalled's avatar

@Lacroix: Probably not, but I never shop at Walgreen’s? Call them, check out any health food stores also, and if you get stuck and are really interested, order online.

Just as a side note: even if a store carries the brand, it probably will only have certain colors in each store, depending on the market. So if the color you want is not there, then try another location. www.walgreens.com can probably tell you if at least they carry the brand. Walgreens carries a large selection of hair color. I have naturally red hair (the hardest to color), and I dye it red (the hardest dye color to make ‘stick’) because I now have tons of gray. I swear to <insert deity>, the one that works the best for me is also pretty much the cheapest: Clairol Nice & Easy.

Supacase's avatar

@Lacroix I like those because they don’t smell as bad as some of the others, the color seems to last longer without fading much, they don’t damage or dry out my hair, and the conditioner (especially with the L’Oreal) makes my hair feel wonderful.

@Likeradar I was told the same thing about Feria.

I like the garnier one.

When I used to dye my auburn hair redder, I used Clairol Nice and Easy. When I decided to have a child, my obstetrician told me not to use any hair coloring, because it could harm a developing fetus. My son is now 29, but I never went back to dying my hair.

I love Ion haircolr. This dye can be purchased at any beauty supply store. It leaves you with incredible shine.
