I’m going to a black tie wedding. Do I have to get a gown or can I wear a cocktail dress?

A cocktail dress should be fine as long as it’s not too brightly colored or provocatively cut, and the hemline shouldn’t fall higher than right around the knee.
Is there a picture online you could show us, like from the store you bought it or something?
GD Kimble is right…You’re fine…just dress it up a lot with nice jewelry and shoes, a pashmina shawl, and you’re good to go.
Yes, for a black tie event a cocktail dress is appropriate, although a longer dress is fine, too. It’s white tie that calls for a ball gown.
Anything out of the ordinary is fashion
If you are a male, I wouldn’t recommend either.
