Yeshua is the original Aramaic proper name for Jesus the Nazarene.

If john was born in the middle east, why did he have an english name?

Hebrew: יֵשׁוּעַ > Greek: Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous) > Latin: Iesus > Spanish: Jesús > English: Jesus

I know, I know, pedantic, but that’s how I do, yo. Today, we’d call him Josh.

John’s Aramaic proper name is Yanni.

He earned Grammy nominations for his 1992 album, Dare to Dream, and the 1993 follow-up, In My Time.

@ChazMaz – your avatar, how much does one of those things cost? I’m back working in TV now, and I’d love to see if management would get us one.

I can’t tell if this question is serious or not.

Well, the Bible names came first.. those were names popular in those times (though, as has been pointed out, were likely something different in the original language, “John” is the English translation). The reason Jesus is a Hispanic name is because it’s a Catholic country and they chose the name out of the Bible. Incidentally, in earlier times, it was very popular to name children from the Bible in lots of countries. Ruth, John, Noah, Abraham, etc. etc. Thankfully for kids these days, the odder names have been mostly phased out (Ezekiel).

I knew a couple of kids when I was young who were named Judah and Timon.

Because Mexicans are God’s chosen people… ~
Because Jesus is a translation of the original Arameic name Yeshua…
Just like the name “Peter” (as an example) has many translations, “Pyotr” in russina, “Pedro” in spanish…. many many many names are translatable. Welcome to the world… there’s a bunch of culture out there.

Because in America, and I guess other English speaking countries, we change names from the original to English. We renamed Christopher Columbus, I think he was born Cristobal Colon? We call Roma Rome, and Venezia Venice. We do this all of the time, not sure why.

@Dr_C “Because Mexicans are God’s chosen people” This is 100% correct. Chosen to bring tequila to all the good boys and girls of planet Earth.

Dr_C's avatar

@75movies God invented Tequila so that mexicans wouldn’t rule the world brother… gotta love it.

Gosh my husband’s name is Salomon (as opposed to the English spelling Solomon), he is Mexican. I already have to call him King, now he is also chosen by God. Jesus Christ he is going to get a big head.

cookieman's avatar

Ooh…I love smoked salomon

wait a minute…

Strauss's avatar

@cprevite especially if the salomon is smoked in tequila first!
