Why do I hate every single piece of clothing I look at?

It’s time to buy new clothes. I have been looking at a bunch of things… and every time I look at something, I don’t particularly feel one way or the other about it. Everything is meh. I want to look good, but clothes seem like such a useless expense to me. What the hell can I do?

Sounds like you were born to live in a nudist colony!
I don’t know why you do but I know why I do. It is because I have put on weight and, to my eyes, everything looks wrong. Oh well, will have to try to use a bit of self-discipline and do some exercise and get in shape.
Where are you looking? A lot of men’s clothes are all the same, doubly so on the web when you can’t fully see the texture.
You could also use a shopping buddy. Someone who’s style you enjoy, knows what looks good on you and won’t let you get away with buying junk.
I share your problem, although once in a while i really find something i like. I find bringing a buddy with me (one with a positive attitude) helps me getting out of the “meh” mode and actually buying something. Once i buy something i am usually pretty happy with it.
Have you looked in the women’s section?
Heh, no I mean I dont like them before I even try them on. It’s noticed it when I was looking at pants yesterday. I was walking down the asile, picking out the reasons I didnt like pants.
I don’t like the belt loops on that one.
Those are too skinny.
Those are too wide.
That pant leg looks funny.
Then, there are no more pants left!
“Too skinny”, “too wide” and “looks funny” can look very different on the body than they do on the hanger. That’s where a friend/consultanbt can be helpful, by getting you to actually try some things on.
Perhaps you’re looking at the wrong sorts of clothes or in the wrong shops? Have you got a specific look you’re trying to achieve?
I agree with @MagsRags: Take someone with you shopping who will goad you into trying things on. My mother is like this in that alone she’ll spend an entire afternoon and come with nothing but complaints but if I go with her and help pick things or push her to actually try the clothes on then she’s surprised how many things she finds.
If you’re a man then most pants with a flat front and no cuffs (no pleats) will look best. Are you shopping for work pants or casual? You can’t go wrong with a an old school pair of dark Levi’s in a straight cut or a pair of darker khaki colored cargo pants.
Beause clothing is crap these days. I know how you feel. :-(
try a thrift shop
you’ll find pants that are already broken in, and they will be a lot cheaper in case you change your mind
Try them on first.
Then take pictures and we’ll give our input.
Another problem solved by Fluther.
Or just go naked.
You’re overly picky/critical maybe?
I have the same problem for the last few years. I’m a woman so my specific complaints are different than yours, like why the f$!k can’t they get the waist back down at the waist on dresses and shirts! Flippin’ fashion has put the waist at my ribs for too long, time for that to change.
But seriously, if you shop in some better stores you might find some more clothing that you like. It will cost you more, but if you are looking in places like Target, Walmart, and Penneys, you have not really given fashion a chance. There is so much garbage out there now. Try Express Men or Bloomingdale’s. Let a salesperson help you, they will make suggestions, they usually know the stock very well, what fits tight or loose (although during Xmas you can hit a less experienced xmas employee) and they will get you a new size if you need it while in the dressing room. Maybe enlist a friend who is a good dresser to go shopping with you.
buy a bunch of flannels that fit well. everyone looks foxy in flannels.
@deni Except large girls who wear them super tight. But you’re right. Guys in flannel? MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
“everyone looks foxy in flannels.”
I just had a flash back to the 80’s. :-)

How about, stop being so awkward….. do some research, find a style you like, & buy clothes in that style.
You say it’s time to buy new clothes. If this is the way you feel right now, this is probably not the time to buy new clothes. If clothes seem like a “useless” expense to you, they probably are. Listen to your inner voice.
Either you do not know how to shop for clothes or you do not understand that the way you dress affects how you feel about yourself and how others react to you.
If you feel unworthy to spend money on quality clothing for yourself, you may want to talk to a therapist.
