Does anyone know enough French to translate this audio clip...

Asked by aiwendil (561points) December 11th, 2009

I know very little French, basically none, but there’s an audio clip at the beginning of Port Blue’s song, Over Atlantic City that I want to know the meaning of. Well, mostly I want to know what is being said in French. And, I assume if you can tell me what he’s saying you can also tell me what it means in English. I don’t need the translation, I’m sure I can figure that out myself, I just really want to know what is being said in French.

You can find a clip of the song here: http://alysonhere.tumblr.com/post/279189932/over-atlantic-city-port-blue

It’s funny… back when I was employed by the patent office, I wondered what our universe would look like if I moved at the speed of light abord a motorcycle (hard to make out this last word, but that’s what I’m hearing).

it says…“its funny…when i was employed at the (wasn’t too sure what he said here..), i always wondered what our universe would look like if i could move at the speed of light…”

Aw, they beat me to it! :)

Oh, thanks. :D Could anyone transcribe the French?

Either of you guys recognize the speaker’s accent? It’s odd to me, but I learned my accent in the north, more Parisian if anything.

OK, but I won’t bother with the accents

C’est drole, a l’epoque ou je travaillais au bureau des inventions, je me demandais a quoi notre univers se resemblerait si je me deplacais a la vitesse de la lumiere en montant sur une motocyclette (expect spelling mistakes).

it doesn’t sound like parisian or french from france…it sounds more like french canadian…quebecois.

@Harp beat me again, but just barely this time.. the guy’s accent made it hard for me to understand some of the words. I’m like an accent snob or something.

BUT.. it makes me a little thrilled that I’ve retained as much knowledge as it took to decipher that clip, it’s been 15 years or so.

Did Einstein say that?

@Harp, thank you vurrry much, and @MissAnthrope, I appreciate the intended effort, even if you did get beaten to it. xD

I was thinking about making a video to the song, so I wanted to know what the only words in the song actually meant.

@jackm, I have no idea, perhaps. I could see it.

@Harp has got it almost right:

It’s actually:

C’est drole, a l’époque ou j’était employé au bureau des inventions, je me demandais a quoi notre univers se ressemblerait si je me déplaçais a la vitesse de la lumière en montant… sur une motocyclette.

and it means:

It’s funny, by the time I was employed at the “office of inventions”, I asked myself what our universe would look like, if I travelled at the speed of light… on a motorcycle.

Harp's avatar

Oops..right. I was going by memory there

But “by the time” wouldn’t be the best translation for “a l’epoque”

@Harp i checked an online dictionary and it says it’s “at the time”. my bad

@bvdshec17 and @Harp, thank you both so much. I really appreciate it. It drives me crazy when the trusty internet can’t tell me the answers to my lyric type questions.
