To force participation.

It’s probably to make sure everyone is learning something.

It could also be to help the more shy students overcome some boundaries and get involved.

The teacher wants all of the kids in the class to take part in the discussion. Or they may notice someone who appears not to be paying attention.

To test their effectiveness as a teacher by seeing if the less enthusiastic chitlins have been paying attention.

Teachers like to embarrass their students and I’m totally not kidding. They do. My arabic teacher does this all the time. Whenever he asks a question, no one looks at him because they are afraid of being called on. But it doesn’t matter, no one is safe. People have seriously forgotten their names because he’s so terrifying.

Sing along! (to the melody of Santa Claus is Coming to Town chorus)

She sees you when you’re sleeping…
She knows you’re not prepared.
She knows that you’ve been goofing off
By the way you won’t meet her stare…

Just to mess with your head

To create balanced participation and to see if you’ve been paying attention and/or done the work.

I do it all the time and I teach adults (many of them older than me).

To get you to participate and listen.

Just in case one of the smart ones doesn’t correct the teacher and causing her embarrassment.

Keep you on your toes, which is just another way of saying what everyone else already has.

Be happy all they do is call on you. Mine threw chalkboard erasers at us if we slept or didn’t participate. And once my eighth grade English teacher duct-taped a student to his desk. Good times.

To keep you from snoring and disturbing everyone else.

Fact from fiction, truth from diction. Logically maybe they are the ones who need the help more. And the teacher does not read minds so the only way she knows of the silent ones know what they should is by calling on them. The ones raising their hands apparently seem to know the answer. Those not doing so may not be doing it because they don’t know, or they are not sure. Second, they may know but be too shy to get involved in which case the teacher has to call on them to get them into class participation, so to speak.

because they assume that your not even paying attention. They don’t mean to embarrass you-they just wanna make sure that you understand the material.
