What Mel Brooks movie is this?

Asked by bright_eyes00 (1343points) December 11th, 2009

A friend mentioned a movie to me by Mel Brooks where he is a jew and is trying to help them escape the nazi’s in germany during WW2 and at one point in the film he dresses up like hitler and all the jews get in a plane that crashes in england with mel brooks still dressed up as hitler. I would like to get this movie for that friend because he mentioned how much he loves it and how he cant find it anywhere. He couldnt remember the name of it and I was lost on google. Anyone have a clue what the name might be?? (i even tried IMDB but he has soooo many movies that he directed/acted/produced so i gave up after a half hour of searching)

Awesome! Thank you! Have you seen this movie? Did you like it?

Does anyone know (have an opinion on) how it would compare to other films that he makes?

@bright_eyes00 I have seen it, but it was a long time ago, and I don’t remember it well. In my mind, nothing tops Young Frankenstein.

jeff is right, it’s To Be Or Not To Be and it was great. You’ll love the Hitler Rap. Have you seen History Of The World? It’s the best Mel Brooks movie ever!!!

The original version of To Be Or Not To Be was one of those movies that should not have been remade IMO. Directed by Ernst Lubitch, starring the incomparable Carole Lombard and Jack Benny. How could Mel Brooks compete with Jack Benny when it came to masquerading as the fuehrer?

I am a HUGE fan of Mel Brooks movies… but I have never been able to stay awake past the first half hour or so of “To Be or Not To Be”.
“The History of the World: Part One” is much better. As is “Robin Hood: Men In Tights”

I like both versions of TBONTB. Brooks version is better than Robin Hood MIT, History of the World, Spaceballs, and any of the stuff he has done since.
His best is The Producers (the original), followed by Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, Blazing Saddles, and To Be…
