Would you share the name of your favorite philosopher or author, and perhaps a passage from that said person?

Asked by Alrook (200points) December 11th, 2009

One of my favorite authors is Arthur Schopenhauer.

“I know of no greater absurdity than that propounded by most systems of philosophy in declaring evil to be negative in its character. Evil is just what is positive; it makes its own existence felt.”

I would like to read up on other authors, so the purpose of this question is mostly to find something…new.

Terry Goodkind is one of my favorite authors, here is a not-so-little quote.

“The only sovereign I can allow to rule me is reason. The first law of reason is this: what exists exists; what is is. From this irreducible, bedrock principle, all knowledge is built. This is the foundation from which life is embraced. Reason is a choice. Wishes and whims are not facts, nor are they a means to discovering them. Reason is our only way of grasping reality—it is our basic tool of survival. We are free to evade the effort of thinking, to reject reason, but we are not free to avoid the penalty of the abyss we refuse to see.”

Though it’s nearly impossible to choose a favourite, I’m particularly fond of Kahlil Gibran

“I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.”
