Would you be willing to share a moment of failed logic or come up with one?

Asked by Alrook (200points) December 11th, 2009

Not sure where I remember this from but -

“If one man can dig a post hole in 60 seconds, then through logic two men can dig the same hole in 30 seconds. Given that increasing the work force to twice its size effectively cut the amount of time it takes to complete the job by half, we can say that 60 men can dig a single post hole in one second…”

- this is just an example, and as one (with common sense) can see, it is rather fail…

Everytime the electricity goes out I instictively think, “I know how to fix this, I’ll just turn on the light.” Um, no, duh, that won’t work. Same thing when the water goes out too. I’ll be taking a shower with bottled water or something and I’m all like, “Why am I doing this again…?”

Person A: God exists.

Person B: How do you know?

A: The Bible says he does.

B: How do you know the Bible is true?

A: Because God wrote it, silly!

Another thought here. The bible example (which is, of course, excellent) is an example of circular logic, and perhaps that’s not what you’re talking about (even though circular logic is in my mind failed logic)? For instance, an example similar to what you’ve provided above would be, if a train engine can pull 100 boxcars at 60 miles per hour, then two engines could pull them at 120 miles per hour.
