So I’m just sittin around. Then suddenly one or both of my ears start ringing for a bit and then it stops.

What are causes for it?

Sudden barometric pressure changes. Or you have a brain tumor.

Because we sometimes forget to set them to “vibrate.”

pressure in the inner ears cause the hairs in your ear to react…causing tinnitus

I like to think it’s because someone is thinking about me. :)

I heard someone say “Oh wow, my ears are ringing, someone is talking about me”. Probably not true, but old wives tales are fun anyways.

@ShiningToast- That’s when your ears are burning.

Hello, I am an Audiologist.

Pretty much everyone experiences that random, fleeting ringing from time-to-time, which is why the old wives’ tale came into being. Unless you have other symptoms associated with it, it is probably nothing.

We do not actually know the mechansim for tinnitus… whether it is happening sporadically, as you describe; or chronically, as @pjanaway and I experience.

Tinnitus is a vague symptom – like a headache – that might be isolated and benign or could be caused by something more serious. Different types of sounds are reported by different patients. The pitch of the sound often correlates with the frequencies where the person’s hearing is the poorest. But many people, including myself, have tinnitus with normal hearing.

@AstroChuck really? Hmm maybe they were wrong, or I misheard them.

I get that all the time too, hearkat’s answer sounds about right.
