How do you make bread bowls?

Asked by J0E (13172points) December 12th, 2009

I’ve always wanted to make some bread bowls to serve clam chowder or broccoli and cheese soup in. Anyone have a good recipe that they use? Or maybe some tips and tricks?

I’m following this thread. Nothing better than a tasty soup in a yummy bread bowl. I’d love a good recipe, as well.

Do you mean you want to make the bread itself?

Any rustic style bread works. Form the bread into balls. I know I should like brown bread for health but I would use an Italian bread recipe for the great crust.

Im not sure, but you can try to shape the bread around the bowl….

Do I make the dough into balls before or after it rises?

faye's avatar

After, and then let it rise again, then bake 350 degrees 30 mins or golde crusty top. you might be able to use bith halves.

@faye Cool, thanks.

… the when it’s ready, you cut the top off and hollow it and pour some hot soup in, but you knew that right @J0E?

I’ve never had much luck baking bread. You need a good, firm crust to hold the soup. You could just go to a good bakery or whole foods and buy small boules. Then you just have to cut the tops off, scoop out the bread inside (saving it for use as breadcrumbs). Boules are also good for serving spinach dip in.

Get a loaf of bread like those roundish ones and make a big hole in it not through it in it.

What time is it going to be ready? I don’t want to be late!!!

@Allie Well of course!

Use your favorite bread recipe, and form the dough into a large ball, perhaps wrap in aluminum foil to help keep it’s shape. Then cook per the recipe, in the oven for the correct temperature and time as any other loaf.

Now simply scoop out the inside, and use for soup, spinach dip, or whatever.
