Will you join me in making fluther more ... Christmasy?

Asked by NaturalMineralWater (11308points) December 13th, 2009

Join me in making Fluther more Christmasy this year! Change your avatar to something… Christmas! How many people here actually celebrate Christmas? Why or why not?

Are you one of those that says “Xmas” ? Why do you do that? It’s Christmas!! All those great old songs never sang about “Xmas” .. Cmon! Seriously!

icy's avatar

dpworkin's avatar

I’m enjoying Chanukkah.

jonsblond's avatar

I started way too early, according to my husband. We changed our avatars Thanksgiving weekend.

gggritso's avatar

I think it would be cool if Fluther had a winter CSS stylesheet—frozen jellies, snowflakes, etc. Bendrewin have bigger fish to fry though ;)

I might change my avatar to something wintery and holiday-neutral later.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

I just love Christmas I guess.. I never understood all the fuss about ruining it.. calling it Xmas.. taking down Christmas trees in airports…. are people flat out mad? Christmas is one of the greatest holidays ever!

Ok ok… I’m good.. settling down… just got a shot of goofy from hearing this song

pjanaway's avatar

Already did, cat in my avatar has a hat on :p

absalom's avatar

Mine’s St. Nicholas. But only because my name is Nicholas.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Santa Jeff is a work in progress, but he’ll be here soon.

erichw1504's avatar

Already did!

jrpowell's avatar

I wrote a greasemonkey script to make it look like this

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/64152

And it is super simple to modify the source to be whatever image you want.

laureth's avatar

I only celebrate Christmas in the secular kind of way, as a day when we hang out with the side of the family I like and eat fattening food. We’re not Christian, so we don’t do the religious stuff. I’ll consider the avatar switch, though!

SoulSearcher's avatar

Sure I will Christmas it up with you, right after I take a nap I will change the image

gggritso's avatar

@johnpowell Try using this, see if it looks good. I don’t want to install Greasemoney ;P It’s not actually tiled (I might do that too), but on small resolutions it should look ok.

jrpowell's avatar

Holy shit gggritso.. That is much better. I just updated the script.

It looks like this now.. http://i.imgur.com/HtJQb.png

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@johnpowell Looks like you have quite a bit of activity to take care of… XD

Great script!

jrpowell's avatar

I just updated the script to fix a problem it was having. I would suggest installing it again if you are one of the three people that already have. Damn you repeat-x!

It should be working well now.

loser's avatar

Is this okay?

jrpowell's avatar

Well played loser.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

<——Here it is. Ahh, good ol’ MS Paint.

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

Deck the collective with boughs of holly!

JLeslie's avatar

Nice idea :). Here’s mine.

JLeslie's avatar

Oh, and I was wondering why you don’t like when people use x-mas? It is just a shorthand.

filmfann's avatar

I put up Christmas decorations here on Thanksgiving weekend.

@JLeslie You are replacing Christ with x. Many religious people object to removing Christ from Christmas.

JLeslie's avatar

@filmfann makes sense. I usually write it out anyway, but I never thought of the X as offending anyone.

chicadelplaya's avatar

Mele Kalikimaka!

laureth's avatar

I always thought the X was supposed to remind people of the crucifixion.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@JLeslie It’s not that I’m offended… it just doesn’t make sense. that’s like calling Halloween Xween… doesn’t that sound retarded? It is awfully convenient, too, that Christ is removed from the picture.

J0E's avatar

I’ve been rockin’ the Yukon Cornelious avatar for a few days already.

laureth's avatar

Actually, Halloween is already a short form of “Hallowe’en,” or “All Hollows Evening.” And yet we adopted that just fine. ;)

gggritso's avatar

@johnpowell I edited the image so that it tiles properly. If you want, you can grab it here

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@laureth I cannot possibly roll my eyes any more at that… Shall I use a different example? Do we call New Years “Xyears?” .. or Boxing Day “X Day” ? .. or Easter.. “Xster”? How about Independence Day… “Xdence Day”? Shall I go on? And people don’t abbreviate All Hollows Evening by taking out the Hallows part…... replacing it with an X… sigh.. I guess I’m wasting my breath… or finger muscle strain… whatever… lol

laureth's avatar

Perhaps it’s relevant then that the Chi Rho was the earliest symbol for the Christian religion.

It is formed by superimposing the first two letters of the word “Christ” in Greek, chi = ch and rho = r. Although not technically a cross, the Chi Rho invokes the crucifixion of Jesus as well as symbolizing his status as the Christ.

Chi, as you may know, looks like an X, and as such, was an ancient way of abbreviating “Christ.” No one’s taking your Christ out of Christmas by saying Xmas. ;) But no one would say Xster or Xyears because it’s not Christster or Christ Years’. Does that make sense now?

chicadelplaya's avatar

@Blondesjon NICE! :) I still can’t help but to think of Chevy Chase when I hear that song, and giggle

JLeslie's avatar

@NaturalMineralWater Well, not to worry, I am one of those people that thinks Christ should be kept in the picture. I think religious holidays should be kept religious, or at minimum a tradition honoring the original meaning of the holiday, and not eroded by capitalism.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@laureth….. because that is why they use the X… riiiiiiiiiighhhhtt.. lol have a nice day…. XD

@JLeslie Being that Christmas has strange and dubious roots not really having anything to do with Jesus I’m not offended that people use the X… I just don’t get it… I know they aren’t using Greek… hahahaa.. but that was a good laugh anyway

laureth's avatar

@NaturalMineralWaterXmas is older than you probably think, and was originated by people who knew the Chi Rho history. <shrug> One person’s ignorance of history doesn’t mean that everyone is similarly ignorant.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@laureth Gahd.. let it go. You’re not helping my Christ mas any… XD

laureth's avatar

It’s hard for me to let misinformed people press a misinformed agenda, sorry. Silence often equals consent or agreement.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@laureth Dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum (it’s the theme to jingle bells) dum dum dum du let it go.. du dum dum dum dum dum DUM let it go let it go.. dum dum dum du dummmm dum dum dum du dum dum dum du du let it freakin go! HOORAY!

congratulations to yahoo answers for sponsoring this retardedry.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@someofyou BTW, thanks to those who changed their avatars. =) And that script! Bravo! I guess there are still a few left who celebrate Christmas in style! =)

laureth's avatar

I rest my case.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@laureth Thank you! You win the day! Here’s a cookie.

laureth's avatar

Thanks for the cookie! Care for a slice of my Yule log? ;)

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

Now, now kids. Tis the season to be jolly.

toomuchcoffee911's avatar

@NaturalMineralWater I would change my avatar but for some reason my computer won’t let me! D:

answerjill's avatar

I call it xmas because it is easier to type it, not because I am trying to negate Christ. I do know that some religious non-Christians use the x to avoid writing it, though. I love the Christmas season, but I would feel wrong about making my profile more Chistmassy, if it is not my holiday. I do wish that some people would realize that not all Americans are Christian. Y’all can go ahead and invite me to your Christmas parties, though!

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@laureth No thanks. Peace and quiet will be fine. XD Merry XMAS!

cyn's avatar

do you like my christmas hat?
I also love Christmas. It’s a day of pretty much, er, EVERYTHING!

sakura's avatar

janbb's avatar

Yay! The background has snowflakes!

fireinthepriory's avatar

I added a santa hat to my Jelly! Also, lovely work on the snowflakes, @gggritso and @johnpowell!! I was wondering if I’d find the masterminds if I went back to this question.
