What do you think about when you get a haircut?

Asked by NaturalMineralWater (11308points) December 13th, 2009

Being military.. I have to get a haircut nearly every weekend. (just did!) The barbers are almost always elderly women who don’t speak English very well so I can’t really relate to them and talk. I mostly just sit there in awkward silence as my head is being pushed around and blink as the waiting area people stare at me.

Haircuts are a significant 10 minute period of time for me because I’ve associated them with some pretty big events in my life time… like the haircut right after my promotion.. or the haircut right after I found out my wife had cheated on me.. or the haircut just after finding out one of my friends had been killed in combat…

What about you? What do you think about when you get a haircut? Do you have a regular barber? Are you picky about your haircut or do you just get it done to get it done? Tell me all about your haircut experiences! (if you want to.. XD)

A shaved head feels wonderful. Wind blowing through my scalp just does things to me.

I pretty much just get it done to get it done. Ever since junior year, I’ve been having my hair buzzed off every time I get a haircut. It’s a very simple haircut and I’m not too worried about people getting it wrong. It’s exactly what my boyfriend gets. So, it’s not that big of a deal.

“I hope this isn’t going to suck.”

I think, “Don’t know why I put this off so long.”

I cut my own hair.

I wish my hair would stop growing right now. It is at the perfect length that I like it to be at. Shaggy, but manageable. Last year it was down to my ass and I loved it except I could not stop combing it for a second or it was impossible. So it is short again. But anyway I actually hate getting haircuts. There is something about having sharp, metal objects that close to my head that makes me uncomfortable.

I get a haircut about once a year. Mostly, I think about what sort of small chatter I should make with the stylist. Beyond what I want done with my hair, I’m usually at a loss. I ask them if it’s been busy today, or if the customers have been nice. I don’t know, it’s hard for me to come up with trivial chitchat – especially in a captive situation.

I usually can’t stop thinking about how much I would rather be doing something else. The person who cuts my hair likes to talk, and I don’t. It’s pretty uncomfortable.

My mom’s friend is a hairdresser and she’s the only person who’s cut my hair since I was about 12. (Shiiit, almost eleven years!) So we usually talk about random things… what I’m doing in school, gossip about her kids and my siblings… Nothing special or different than what I normally talk to her about. It’s always fun, since I don’t get to see her that often and I like to chat with her. I’m afraid of having anyone else cut my hair at this point. She likes to give me fun hair products, too – always a plus.

Generally I just think about what I’ll be doing later that day or what people will say when they see my new haircut. Which brings me back to checking to see that she/he is doing it right. And if it looks good then I imagine ideal situations where people keep complementing me and I get lots of advances from girls. But that doesn’t actually happen but it does pass the time while I get it cut. If it looks bad then I imagine what I’ll say…“Yeah, I’m so not gona pay….but I will….crap..”

It’s hard to think about anything with all of those little follicle screams echoing in my head.

I can only think that I hope this haircut will make me look better than I did before I had it!

I think about how I should be trying to make conversation with the person cutting my hair, and how I can’t think of anything because I’m so sleepy. Having my hair touched and worked on like that relaxes me to the point where I could fall asleep in the chair (I almost did last night).

Been cutting my own hair for about 15 years now…I always enjoy it because I tend to get a little self esteem boost from hving a “high and tight” buzz cut.

I think about how much brain power I am losing by spending two hours listening to the dumb converesations around me. And I don’t have that much to spare any more!

I cut my own hair so I listen to talk radio while I do it.

The wonderful noggin’ massage (when getting my hair washed), that I wish would go on forever. Hearing my hairdresser’s cute British accent whilst cutting my hair. Checking out the art that’s hanging all around the salon. My stylist (owner of the salon) has an original Beatles painting done and signed by Michael McCartney. It’s about 6 feet tall and I’m memorized by it. I would love to have that hanging in my living room. Oh, and I think “okay, there’s one thing that I can knock off of my “to do list. I got my hair did”.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@jmah That is something I miss from Korea. After every haircut I’d get that head/back massage… it was bloody awesome!

@NaturalMineralWater I only wish that they would go on for longer.

I just take a short nap, just like I do when I am getting my teeth cleaned. When they speak to me I barely hear them, because I am, effectly, asleep.

I think to myself, “I’ll be glad when this is over!” I don’t like getting haircuts.

VohuManah's avatar

I just hope she doesn’t ‘ow’ use the clippers to cut that part of my ‘ow’ hair. I told her to use ‘ow’ but I guess she ‘ow’ won’t listen to me ‘ow that hurts stop pulling my hair’. Then I think about scalping and other lovely anecdotes I shouldn’t be remembering while around sharp things.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@Baggins Why not?

@VohuManah hahahaha… get a new barber?

Baggins's avatar

@NaturalMineralWater – I was in the military, too, and when you’re “required” to get a haircut (especially exactly to specifications-you know what I mean about that, I’m sure), it just is not fun for me. My father was a former Marine and made me and my brother get crew cuts when all the other kids had much longer hair. I resented that, also. I grew up in the 60’s.Then when I meant my wife, I had this grey blotch on the front of my hairline so she suggested that I tint my hair to get rid of it. And when you tint hair, you sit there for what seems like hours. Not really, it just seemed like it. :) Years later, I said that I didn’t want to tint my hair anymore so I didn’t and now my hair is uniformly grey. A little long winded but you get the idea. As you can see, haircuts mean trauma to me. :D And thank you for your service, mate!

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@Baggins Oh wow.. lol.. yeah.. being forced to get a haircut is never really that good.. and thank you for your service !

Please dont make a booboo!!

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@RubyReds You mean like a random bald spot? XD

Silhouette's avatar

Procrastination. The long list of things I seem to put off for as long as humanly possible, like haircuts.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

@Silhouette Kind of ironic that we think of procrastination during a time which we are helpless to correct that deficiency… being that we are gowned up and having our hair cut.. XD funny humans..
