What ideas do you have about Hawaii?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37734points) December 13th, 2009

I live in Hawaii, but before I moved here 12 years ago, I had many preconceived ideas. Some were true and some were false.

One idea was that the place was surrounded by sandy beaches, which is only half true. Sand is rare here and most of the coastline is made up of volcanic rock.

One common mistake is that Honolulu, the capital, is on the Big Island while it’s actually on Oahu.

What do you think of Hawaii? Responses from those who’ve been here and those who haven’t are more than welcome.

I’ve never been but I think of a high cost of living, service industry jobs and beautiful water.

G’day Jake,

Thanks for your question.

I have never been to Hawaii. My ideas are great climate and good beaches for surfing although Australian beaches are good for sand.

Other things that come to mind are Pearl Harbor, the death of Captain Cook and the Union Jack on the flag. As well as Hawaiian shirts, leis and aloha.

Regards

Spam and Pineapples are the main diet

Bananas come to mind because of the James Michener novel in which the missionary’s wife was forced to eat bananas. But I realize that’s a somewhat idiosyncratic reaction.

I’m of the idea that the native Hawaiians had a soveriegn nation that was stolen by the U.S. military for a base in Pearl Harbor. Their Queen was put under house arrest and their nation was made a protectorate of the U.S. before it was made a state.

I’ve been there three times; twice when I was 5 and once when I was 14. It’s the most beautiful place in the world.

Hawaii isn’t cold.

I’ve been there several times (Oahu + Maui), so my ideas about it are only based on experience. I love the place. The weather is great, it’s beautiful, and it’s a lot of fun. Plus it’s where Lost is filmed.

I’ve spent a few summers on Maui as a kid, and have visited friends on Oah’u several times over recent years. I think I could live there forever…Seriously.

I think of wonderful snorkeling off the coast of Maui and Lana’i. I also think of fresh pineapple and Lappert’s ice cream. :-)

@Dracool : The history is a bit more complex. Briefly, there were many settlers here from the US, who were instrumental in the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. They later petitioned the US government for status as a territory and were granted it. This would currently be considered illegal internationally, but at the time was mostly ignored by the world powers. It’s a shame. In the late 1950s, all the citizens of the state participated in a vote to become a full state in the US. It passed, but I am unaware of the statistics for that election.

Hawaii is on my wish list of places to visit :)

I have never been to Hawaii before, though it is on my list of places to see someday. The way I picture it is with palm trees, dolphins in the ocean, beautiful tropical flowers blooming, clear blue skies. Those are the things I picture. But I have seen online stories of Hawaiian ghettos, with drugs and crime. I guess every place has its downsides.

I’ve been there to visit. Beautiful Islands and water and beaches. Too bad some tourist feel it necessary to ruin it for other people. I ran into some who were so rude to the local people and other tourists.

I’ve lived here my entire life. Oahu to be specific. It’s beautiful and all, but after two decades here there isn’t much to do that hasn’t already been done.

Barbed wire on the beaches, at least when my dad was there in 1943.

Good to visit not to stay been here about two years now and hate it so much. But I am more of a city person paradise for me is Chicago. Use to live there but came here cause I’m married and he is military.BTW Hawaii hates being part of America and Hates the Military which I don’t understand because now they have more jobs because of the military being here. Huge culture shock too. The good things they have are The Shack cause of there blues bacon burgers and it’s good for beach people and beach sports. But I hate the beach (I know i know “OMG WHATS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!” I get that all the time from my friends.) But it’s too expensive, people DON’T know how to drive here, I have to drive at least an hour to get to a wall mart or targe. Honestly the place just makes me angry.
