Why do the cell phone companies do this?

I wanted to get the Droid for Christmas so i went to Verizon to check it out. I had just had my newer phone stolen so i had to use my upgrade to get another one. They told me that in order to buy the Droid and purchase unlimited Internet for it, I would have to pay a $150 cancellation fee for my current phone (for the new plan), and a $150 upgrade fee (because my upgrade had been recently used). Or, they said, I can wait until August for my upgrade to come. I think this is ridiculous. Don’t they realize that they are just delaying my paying them? I doubt anyone would pay $500 for a $200 phone, so why do they try to charge it? Why so they think I wouldn’t pay the cancellation fee to switch to AT&T? At least i could get an iPhone for Christmas. I don’t understand how this company thinks at all.

Whenever you ask “don’t they realize” or “why do they think” in relation to a large corporation, you’re already in trouble.
Talk to a SUPERVISOR by calling VERIZON Headquarters…..
If she or he begin to go on baout all the cahrges ; mention that you’ll go to AT-T or T-Mobile .
Verizon was recently rated as THE very BEST Cell Company , T-Mobile came in 2nd , Sprint was 3rd , and AT_T was in dead last place…..
Verizon is known for “Co-operation” and “Customer Service” so hopefully the Home Office WILL be able to assist you… Good Luck !
haha i alredy threatened that. the problem is that everyone in my family is hooked onto that plan. so to cancel and move on, i’d have to pay a $150 contract termination fee for each person…
@iRemy_y Ok; BUT did you speak to the Verizon HOME OFFICE ? Just talking to these dim wits at the local stores etc won’t do any good…
IF you did ; then call back and ask to speak to THEIR supervisor… You can go all the way to the President of Verizon…. Ya’ just have to keep at it .
I work at AT&T, so I can answer this for you.
If you lost your phone and they are telling you that you’d have to open a new account, it’s because you were still in contract. When you started service (or last bought a discounted phone – and $200 is a discounted phone, retail prices for most phones is $500—$800) you signed a two year contract stating that you would keep their service for that amount of time, and part of the contract was that you could not get a new phone at a discount until you have fulfilled more than half of those 2 years.
If you switch to AT&T, they will do the same. All cell phone companies with contracts do this. That’s why they offer you insurance with your phone.
Whether you take their offer now or not—you will continue to pay your monthly charge—even if you don’t even have a phone. Get a Go Phone at Target or a cheap phone on ebay for around $25 to use until you qualify for another upgrade.
you should be able to get it at the upgrade price by signing a 2 year contract. i dont see why you would have to pay a “cancellation fee”. sounds like bull.
@deni If he/she was already signed into a two year contract, if she wants to buy a new phone at the discounted upgrade price, she would have to start a new line. If she didn’t want to have two separate lines, she would have to cancel the older one.
@stemnyjones i’ve ruined my phone before and went in to see what they could do, and they let me get the lower price (not the New Every 2 price, but the price one would get if they were signing up with Verizon for the first time) if I signed for another 2 years with them. I’ve had a lot of friends do this as well, it’s never been a problem. Maybe it just depends who you talk to, i dunno.
@deni Many times it does depend on who you talk to, honestly. Working in a call center for AT&T, I did things that were against company policy if I liked the person and they talked to me with respect.
